A day late and a few dollars short:

If you are buying used, and especially if it is "as is" (no warranty), find a mechanic you trust (ASA AND ASE is best) and ask them how much they will charge to give a car you are thinking of buying a once over to let you know exactly what WILL need repairs.... and, whether or not the buy is worth your money.

IF the seller won't allow you to take the car to a mechanic before the sale, then don't buy. That, to me, says the seller knows there is an issue and they won't be able to sell the car if they are up front about it.

I'm thinking this would be covered under the Lemon Laws.

If it's not fixed get the money back.

Better look at your bill of sell. Its going to say as is.... if not, you might have a chance. Good luck!
