Since many people rely on churches for socialization, if the religion part was taken out and people gathered in community only centers. Would it work? Thoughts.

No! Social need is what gets us there; why we continue can be something else, be it habit, recognition etc we seek social acceptance in our community thru our goal of being “nice”
Where other group bid us together thru commonality/ e.g. age, culture, interest or activity etc church also uses these with a dose of ritual & music.

It would not have as many people attending.

I have heard of Jewish Community Centers-I had a friend who belonged to one-anyone ever gone to one? I haven't.

I am 4th-term President of an over-55 singles social group, the Club has been around over 40 years and currently has just over 100 Members, plus another 400 followers online. I am 69, many of the Members are a huge inspiration to me, they are dancing, dining, traveling, some 20+ years older than me! You can have friends & fun at any age, just open your eyes!

Like @silvereyes says, some are there because they need answers, and need leadership. That only applies to some church goers though... Some are there to teach and lead. Some are there just to play in the band or sing in the choir. Some are only there because that's what their parents did. For many, it's mainly the social aspect; the mutual support ("I need help moving!" ).

Most regular church goers I knew couldn't repeat their denomination's dogma to save their lives, but showed up every Sunday afternoon at the soup kitchen to volunteer. So to answer your question, I think it would work, but in a limited way compared to churches.

I think so. It has to have some sort of basic meaning for a person’s life, but that could be done with basic education-taxes, social skills, communication.....

Partly, but it would not provide the structure people are after. Ritual = structure. If it were just communal, going to a crowded mall would help. Those tribal rituals serve several purposes. Those buzz words that your tribe knows that will allow identification across the lobby of a bus depot provides auditory symbolic connection. The movements of entering the church and shuffling to get your favorite spot in the pews. The leader, hopefully charismatic, who leads the herd through all the motions, chooses the words from the magic book, and selects the just so right songs that all will sing in unison. The various rites of passage that are observed inside the church setting that provide rock solid benchmarks for the rest of ones life. All of this and more comes together to give the religious experience for the sheep who so happily follow the directions of the leaders and the lessons that pour from the miraculous writings.

Free thinkers, especially those who have found peace in their way of seeing the universe will go to a convention from time to time -- if and only if it's convenient -- and join in some schmoozing afterward, but they have removed themselves from churchly things -- the rituals -- the words -- the herd instinct. It is spelled out in their description: "FREE thinker."

Many social structures play a large part in the socialization of children -- families, neighbors and neighborhoods, friends, schools, clubs, activity groups and sports teams, etc. If people need community centers, they will create them. If not, let's not create an artificial social structure.
