The fossil fuel lobby has actively worked in many countries to protect their subsidies and avoid the imposition of carbon taxes. Doing so protects their profits.
US spent on these subsidies in 2015 is more than the country’s defense budget and 10 times the federal spending for education
A new International Monetary Fund (IMF) study shows that USD$5.2 trillion was spent globally on fossil fuel subsidies in 2017. The equivalent of over 6.5% of global GDP of that year, it also represented a half-trillion dollar increase since 2015 when China ($1.4 trillion), the United States ($649 billion) and Russia ($551 billion) were the largest subsidizers.

Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.The study is about the impact of fossil fuel on society .. the 'subsidy' includes costs for effects of pollution (healthcare, climate change effects, etc) so the figures are at best estimates and not directly linked to the amount a government actually subsidises a fossil fuel.
If you have coal fired power stations and feel bad enough about global warming - have your electricity cut off.
If you have a fossil fuel driven car and you feel bad enough about global warming - take the car to a scrapyard and have it crushed (no point selling it as that would not decrease the emissions)
If you have an electric powered car, and don't have solar panels, wind, hydro or other renewable source of electricity - if you want to stop global warming, sorry you must scrap yours too
The whole way our societies are constructed, the lifestyle we have all bought into, is predicated on free availability of cheap electricity and transport - and society will scream loudly if, or more likely when, these are threatened

you think these 'subsidies' were not paid by Obama, Bush jr, Clinton, Bush snr, Reagan, Carter, Ford and probably further back - get infuriated over the right stuff, there is plenty to go for.
