LINK Confederate President's name removed from arch at Virginia's Fort Monroe - CNN

Long ago we were assigned to this base. I think this is a good decision, just about 100 years tardy.

I am, in principal, against removing historical artifacts, statues, changing building names etc. The past was the past and things were done that would not be accepted now. Trying to whitewash out the names, the actions, does not change what happened - better to keep these monuments from history, and ensure that the children of today learn what happened, why and how it happened. Teach them know how to stop it happening again.

My grandson was to attend a primary school in Jacksonville, FL....named for a Confederate General. My daughter joined other parents and DEMANDED the name be changed. Imagine being a young black child (or the parents of one)and having to attend Nathan Bedford Forrest school? ACK!

A nation that negates, refutes and ignores it's past is domed to repeat that past.

To remember is one thing. To pay tribute is another. You won't see an Adolf Hitler street in Jerusalem!
