LINK Study: Atheism Isn’t Bad for Your Health | Hemant Mehta | Friendly Atheist | Patheos

In a new paper published in the Journal of Religion and Health, researcher David Speed says that atheism, contrary to popular belief, is not bad for your physical health, emotional health, or psychological well-being.

Maybe you never thought it was bad for your health. But a lot of research has shown religion is good for your health for reasons that have nothing to do with the supernatural. Bob Smietana of Religion News summarizes that general line of research:

If religion is good for you, the thinking goes, then non-religion must be bad for you, right?

Not true, says Dr. Speed. While religious people may avoid “vices” because of peer pressure from their religious communities, or because they fear committing a sin, a lot of atheists make those same decisions simply because of their personal moral framework.

"Contrary to popular belief" ?. Belief by theists trying to justify their illogical beliefs maybe.

True. The study proves the theists wrong.

As an atheist I'm not always worrying or thinking about some religious "do not" that others go out of their way to make up for you. As an atheist I have no guilt.

Funny thing about “ researches”. If you look long enough, you are bound to find one the supports your view. As the saying goes, statistics don’t lie, but statisticians do!

Seems like there are many more factors than religion affecting health and happiness.

Sorry Mr. Speed, btw, haste, aka Speed, makes waste and often kills as well, BUT IF you did your research properly then you may well have found that, for the most part at least, Atheists/Agnostics, etc, tend to live longer, live more contentedly, are happier, more productive, less troubled, have a lower suicide rate, commit less crimes, care for their children and families more and better, are more kinder and caring towards others, even strangers btw, are also community and socially minded people who do NOT need to be told by some self-appointed 'Shepherd' every week or so of exactly what Morality, Ethics and Human Decency ARE according to his/her interpretations of some dusty book of Myths and Bunkum.

“... a lot of research has shown religion is good for your health....”???

Bob Smietana of Religion News probably flunked kindergarten.

Probably flunked out at being Breast-fed by his mother also, if the truth be known.

Research by religious groups have not exactly been unbiased.

@snytiger6 WHAT, they're NEVER biased, just single-minded ( because their Preacher does ALL their thinking for them), semi-brain dead, Arse-wipes that couldn't tell their arse from their elbow unless someone explained the difference to them in words of 2 syllables or less.

It has been absolutely great for my health!! No need to fear dying anymore. No one escapes it.

It is my strong belief and conviction that it will be no different than pre-birth or going to sleep and never waking up.
