The 13th Warrior, one of Antonio Banderas best roles in my opinion.

Very underrated movie, very adept at sliding in some wry humor without losing the narrative.

The wild men sort of match early Roman reports from Western Britannia about people that lived on flesh and wore skins. At one point the Romans marched an entire Legion into the Northwestern portion of the Island and vanished, something that's never happened before or since. News of the vanishing traumatized Rome so much they went into full Trump mode and built a wall, Hadrian's Wall to protect themselves from the wild Scotsmen.

He seems so effortlessly knowledgeable and talks about it in a compelling way.
I just discovered him and have only heard the Roman / Celt stuff so far

Yes, he was very good in this. An underappreciated movie. And Vikings really did duel with three shields as portrayed, and it was generally frowned upon, because it often meant the loss of a good fighter. As also portrayed. Great movie.
