Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter Passes Away at Age 96
Nov. 19, 2023
ATLANTA (Nov. 19, 2023) — Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, a passionate champion of mental health, caregiving, and women’s rights, passed away Sunday, Nov. 19, at 2:10 p.m. at her home in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 96. She died peacefully, with family by her side.
Mrs. Carter was married for 77 years to Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, who is now 99 years old.
“Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” President Carter said. “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”
She is survived by her children — Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy — and 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A grandson died in 2015.
“Besides being a loving mother and extraordinary First Lady, my mother was a great humanitarian in her own right,” said Chip Carter. “Her life of service and compassion was an example for all Americans. She will be sorely missed not only by our family but by the many people who have better mental health care and access to resources for caregiving today.”
The schedule of memorial events and funeral ceremonies will be distributed as soon as possible to media and posted on www.rosalynncartertribute.org. This tribute website includes the family’s official online condolence book and opportunities for memorial gifts, as well as an official biography and downloadable photos.
The Carter administration had its ups and downs, but Jimmy and Rosalyn knocked their post-presidency out of the park. Good people.
I feel so sad for Jimmy. I really thought he would pass before she did.
I expect he won't be long behind her... And I think they were both ready.
I never had any reason to criticize either Rosalynn or Jimmy. They lived their faith rather than wearing it expressed in a badge on their shoulders--and they would have declined the badge had it been offered.
Last presidential couple who actually cared about Americans.
@Druvius I agree.
@Druvius I don't think that's true. I fact, I'm pretty sure the only presidential couple that really didn't care a whit about the American people was the Trumps. And I say that as a big critic of Reagan and the Bushes. Even if I don't agree with their policies, I don't think they didn't care.
@Flyingsaucesir Reagan was so disassociated with the "common folk," he wasn't able to care for them. This was evidenced when he was governor of CA and turned the mentally ill out on the street. Same with the Bushes--too rich to empathize with the poor and even the middle class. I will venture to say that the Clintons did have some empathy, especially Hilary.
@Gwendolyn2018 I saw Hillary's first press conference after they were elected. She promised to get every American ... health insurance. Not health care. And they went on to sell out the unions and working class and made the Democratic party slaved to corporate America.
@Druvius that's a big claim.
@Gwendolyn2018 The "peace dividend" he got elected on somehow turned into ever more money for the rich.
Sorry,I should have said Rosalynn.
You can edit it.
@MyTVC15 thanks
Condolences to the Carter family;R.I.P. to Lillian Carter,the world needs more people like her
"Miss Lillian" was an outstanding woman who undoubtedly inspired thousands of other women her age, when she went into the Peace Corps! If I'd been in other circumstances, I'd certainly have joined her.
