LINK At anti-abortion rally, Florida Lt. Gov. urges everyone to not "vote like atheists" -- Friendly Atheist

"We cannot go to church and pray like Christians and turn around and vote like atheists," Florida Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez said

Nov 04, 2024

When Florida began early voting last month, Gov. Ron DeSantis and Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez spoke at an event alongside a slew of anti-abortion doctors (all wearing white coats to project trust and authority) to tell the state to reject Amendment 4. That ballot measure, if it passes with 60% support, would undo the state’s extreme (six-week) abortion ban. It’s currently polling at exactly 60% support, which means the final result could go either way.

Just like so many 'christian' politicians the 1st amendment has no real meaning. They do whatever helps them gain and retain power. If people let them get away with this ploy the onus is on them.

On our ballots it is Amendment 3 and I will vote no on it tomorrow. People against the ban knew better than trying to argue with these idiots. They just sent literature for your mailbox instead.

Trying to look up abortion in the bible is misleading because "abortion" is a modern term. Jesus said nothing of it and I'm sure poor hungry people had their own ways of doing it. However, in the book of Numbers 5:11-31 we find the bitter water test for adultery. If a man had been away and his wife becomes pregnant this test was done by the priest and if the fetus was not this man's child it would abort in a short time. We see that people then had the same worries as today but governments had not taken of control of a woman's body to force her to carry a pregnancy to term.

The bible does advocate the husband forcing his wife to drink a potion to cause a miscarriage if the believes the child isn't his. Sanctity of the child's life isn't considered as women and children were considered property of men to do with as they please in biblical times.

@snytiger6 This is also why it did not matter if Lot got back his original wife and children in the end. They were only property.

@DenoPenno Were you thinking of Lot or Job ... Lot's wife was supposedly turned to a pillar of salt because she looked back when they fled Sodom. Job's wife and children were all killed, by god but according to the story they were replaced.

A note about Lot's story. I think he lusted after his daughters, and killed his wife so he could have access to them. The story told that the daughters got him drunk to take advantage of him, so they could have children doesn't hold water. Studies have been done on drinking, and persons who drink even to black out states, were always aware, in the moment, of what they were doing and kept their sense of right and wrong. Those studies led to changes in drunk driving laws in the U.S., as people are fully aware of what they are doing, in the moment, while drunk, even if they may not or can't remember it later on. So, anyway, if the story were actually true, Lot would have known he was having sex with his daughters, and I suspect probably forced himself onto them. After all they were his own property.

There is absolutely no biblical basis for opposing abortion. The pro-life canard has always been promoted for political gain and as a handshake to identify fellow cult members. No surprise that a Republican would use bigotry to support her lies. Not a good look for someone with an Hispanic surname.

And a woman. She should be ashamed of herself.

@pedigojr Not having shame is one of the observables that distinguish inhuman MAGAs. Tear off the latex shell and you'll find a reptilian underneath.

In other words, they shouldn't vote rationally but should vote because they are true believers.

Like Neil deGrasse Tyson says, they know enough about something to believe they are right but not enough to know that they are wrong.

For example, in the clip below the young woman who wants to waste her vote on Jill Stein, knowing full well that Stein will not win, while professing that she doesn't want a Trump presidency.

Also, saying that ALL politicians are in it for themselves, disregarding the fact that she also, like most voters, have an interest in who wins and are voting accordingly. I'm sure Kamala Harris wants to win for her children's sake and also for children, women and all Americans in general. I don't think that can be said about Trump who wants power, wealth, and revenge, and has made that extremely clear.

I have 'friends' who espouse the desire to vote for a third-party candidate. It's a perplexing topic because...

Against: The situation is too dire to spend one's vote on a candidate who had no chance to win. Democracy MUST prevail against Trump and his fascism.

For: It is my vote and I disapprove of Harris because she is not progressive enough. Voting is a basic freedom of expression. I worry that both parties cannot be trusted.

I go with the 'against' but I have sympathy for those that don't trust the system, feel it is (irrevocably?) corrupt.

It is the curious quality of cognition that we give priority to particular values, and these decisions depend on the perspective or filters that we choose to apply. In this case, for example, one may choose an environmental filter and say that Trump is too great a risk to the environment to vote 3rd party, as Buttigieg suggests.

Buttigieg is wonderfully intelligent and a pleasure to watch. I'd like to know more about his values. I hope he will continue to serve the country with his quality communication.

@racocn8 I talked to my younger daughter just this evening on what is at stake in this election and how she should vote and vote blue. The whole thing was a "no" and I'm not going to do it. She says she hears me and believes me but she just does not care. She claims not to care one way or the other and no discussions will change her mind. Dictator or president she don't care. She's pretty much been that way since my grandson was murdered a few years back. I will present facts but I will not argue.
