I suppose someone might quibble with the numbers (I haven't crunched them), but the point remains - excessive wealth to this degree is an absurdity and obscenity. No one "earns" or needs more than a billion, ... or more than 100 million, ... or 50 million for that matter.

Then seize away!

The proletariat do not get to seize from the elites until it gets so bad that there is no other option. Artificial Intelligence may be a game changer, maybe not.

@Surfpirate and yet Senator Warren has been talking about wealth tax for weeks!

@Killtheskyfairy When Sen Warren turned on Bernie it said a lot about who held the reins to her bridle. So much money and power with such an agenda, bend a knee or lose your head.

@Surfpirate I saw Bernie and his bros attacking Warren long before she’d had enough. The sexism was glaring and the snakes were in his camp.

@Killtheskyfairy Thank goodness there are sane men like Ted Cruz to keep the country on track then.

@Surfpirate Yeah, because nothing screams republican like a liberal Democrat calling out Bernie gaslighting nonsense.

The whole point of a modern capitalist economy is to have the vast majority of the wealth not be in circulation but to be shown to be something everyone can aspire to IF they are willing to work hard for very little.
This is the myth of the work ethic.
This encourages productivity and profit under the myth of potential prosperity, which is reinforced from time to time by acts of philanthropy and hegemony, and the introduction of new "must have" products that have built in obsolescence and need to be replaced periodically with new better versions.
All of this leads to on paper wealth that does not actually exist, since no country has been on the gold standard for over fifty years, which is stored in the accounts of corporations and individuals who could never actually spend it because if they did, they entire system would collapse.
This is the myth of international finance
In order to purge large amounts of this imaginary money they world has occasional recessions that wipe billions of money units off the accounts, but that does not actually go anywhere, it simply ceases to exist.
This give the excuse to the industrial complex to impose austerity on the poor again and generate the illusion of more wealth through hard but cheaply paid work.

Historically, there is revolution when wealth disparity reaches these levels, a bunch of people die horribly and much of the wealth gets redistributed again, then the cycle repeats.

I agree...the disparity of wealth distribution is obscene ...especially when people are starving and struggling to pay for food and shelter...and yet the richest amongst us keep getting richer.

Same as it ever was....

@Canndue Yes...but it doesn’t have to be so.

@Marionville I agree, and how many decades have gone by with no change. The wealthy protect themselves very well.

@Canndue
... no change in a positive direction. But a definite change toward increasing extremes of wealth in recent decades.

@nicestuff yeah, there is always some up and down movement. Just enough to adjust popular opinion sufficient to prevent real change. Democracy is cruel like religion, promises you hope, but never really delivers....

@Canndue They have their gated communities, secure private compounds for the super rich, with high tech security and their own private security forces. They don't even need the cops to protect them in most cases, unless a mob of thousands showed up with guns, in which case they would call in the cops to help out.

@TomMcGiverin funny thing is most people are ok that there are wealthy and poor, it’s just the disparity is so great

@Canndue The majority of them are ok with it because they have the delusion that someday either they or their children will become rich. They are sorely mistaken.

@TomMcGiverin you are right, the American dream....

@Canndue As George Carlin used to say, " They call it the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe in it", well, I would add, you have to be asleep if you are sane and rational...
