The fellow who Linda works with sent a few samples of wood he's cutting up for the fireplace home for me to look at for projects. Black Walnut & Mulberry. The walnut is about 8 years dead and dry. The mulberry is fresh. Both are really nice for woodworking. I'll be taking my chainsaw out there this weekend.
Wow! This would be a carving paradise piece of wood! Incredible grain features. A dremel with a flex shaft and some carbide burrs!
Sounds like fun, so I will look forward to seeing the results!
That black walnut ❤
Would love to see the mulberry split.
Stand by Heidi. I'm anxious to run it through a saw myself.
@bigpawbullets now you have to do the photos!
Lovely colours. What purpose have you in mind?
Ive no particular project in mind Bear. I'm constantly on the lookout for indigenous hardwood to harvest. I like to keep a supply for woodturning, gunstocks, knife/axe handles.... I've recently discovered that Mulberry is a "cousin" of Osage-Orange and is as good for making bows. I'm going to go out to this guy's farm and see how the Mulberry tree looks for that application.
@bigpawbullets I hope that you will have fulfilling gathering & endeavours in your future.
@FrayedBear
Thank you Bear!!
Pretty yellow color to the wood . Can't believe he's burning walnut .
Not every piece of Walnut is "furniture" grade. Here in Southern Ohio we've a lot of farm field "fence lines" that have to be cut back annually.

Posted by KateOahuThis morning I went to a class for making a terrarium with native plants at the Waikiki Community Center, which is about three blocks from where I live.

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
