Anyone know what this is? Husband splitting firewood and this was inside a piece that was hollowed out....

They once were thought to be created by fire, because they would live in logs and come out when the logs were burned.

Turns out that Tennessee is where the cave salamander is native to. We've seen a couple of them up here - over the years - its the perfect habitat for them.

An orange newt, lives in wet areas in the northeast. I found them in upstate New York. That's a nice healthy fat one, probably feeding on termites.

Yes indeed! The entire center o f that one piece of wood was hollow ....and full of ants...and he was able to scamper out before the splitter did its deed.... 🙂

That's what we thought....I've never seen one that bright orange before. We relocated it to a place that should make it very happy... 🙂
