For those of us who like to grow flowers, are there any colors you prefer not to grow? I worked with a guy who didn't like pink flowers. He ssid he was fine wifh every other color, but not pink. For me, it would be white flowers. Now, I like white with another color accent or a bit of shading, but an all white flower just doesn't do much for me. Anyone else have a color aversion, or a color preference?

I tried for 12 years to have an all white Garden but I would buy something that was supposed to be white and it would have a yellow or pink tint. Last spring A friend gave me four Rose of Sharon trees she said three were white and one was lilac but couldn't remember which was which. Naturally the Lilac one ended up in my white Garden. It is much too pretty to move and now I am free from that silly aspiration.

I like all colours combined with another colour. As you take away colour the predominant colour begins to become boring. In the correct setting, a single colour looks awesome.
The majority of flowers are yellow and orange. I like bright luminescent colours that turn your head from a distance. I also like multicolour flowers that draw your eye.
White is a neutral colour with any other colour. Colours like pink and orange don't really go together.
We have a colour theme from front to backyard. No yellow, orange or bright colours in the backyard. The back has a calming effect with all soothing softer colours. The front is set up as an impact statement with bright colours. White can easily go in either yard. It's hard to get a good close up photo of a white flower so it's my least favourite for that reason.
The bright red Crocosmia 'Lucifer' didn't come back for us this year. This is my favourite colour now.
The first photo is the back the rest are the front yard.
Can you see lucifer?

Pink is my least favorite, and I am a rosaian. Pink is by far the most common color to find in roses. I Don't refuse to grow pink roses. They just are about my last preference. Well, ok, there are some greenish-white novelty roses I have no use for, but as most plants have green foliage, which I certainly Don't mind, I am not counting that.

I hadn't eeven tbought about green flowers. They don't really bother me, but what would the point be? There are foliage plants with more color than something like Bells of Ireland.

@RussRAB "what is the point" is Right! ?

My wife hates red roses because her ex would always give them to her after he had cheated on her, I found this out the hard way when we first started dating and I bought her what I thought was a nice, romantic bouquet of roses.

I don't very much like the 'hot' part of the spectrum - yellow, orange, red - but I think that is because i live in a hot country and I want to get back to the cool!

Some people say that orange is a hard colour to use in the garden, because it is the colour which most tends to clash with green, which is of course the main hue in most gardens. It is only a hypothetical clash based on the colour wheel colour theory, but it does seem to be hard to use well even in practice so perhaps it is true.

I love to look at an orange tree laden with fruit particularly if I can pick and devour some.

@FrayedBear Yes it is the colour of ripeness beyond all others.

@Fernapple Actually there is one orange, Valencia, that is normally heavily tinged with green when perfect. It is a very juicy orange. I also associate ripeness with the red blush of ripe apples.

I must be uncouth or something. The orange flowers I've grown never bothered me with respect to the foliage. Nasturtiums were one of the first plants I grew in my younger years. They were an orange variety and I thought they were great. I have enjoyed nasturtiums since.

@RussRAB I grow a lot of orange day lillies, and it does not bother me too much most days. But they can get a bit brazen sometimes.

I love every color flower but the scent of some is intolerable for me.

SkagwayKim Level 7 Nov 13, 2018

Yes. Lilly scent gives me a headache, and I do not usually get headaches.

@Fernapple stargazer lilies are the worst for me. Just that sickly-sweet fragrance turns my stomach.

I have to admit, i love tbe scent of flowers. Sorry that they cause you discomfort.

I prefer them alive . That black/brown color doesn't do a thing for me .

Cast1es Level 9 Nov 12, 2018

Can't argue with that. I've had my share of brown dead one, and I'm always disappointed.

Irises are my favorite and they have brown and near black ones (that aren't dead). I ndver cared much for the brown ones and was once intriqued by the near black ones. Ive since decided i like those with more definite color whether blue, purple, red, yellow, pink, etc.

I prefer pinks, purples, blues, but I'm good with almost any colors. My least favorite would be orange. You won't find much orange (if any) in my house, closet, or yard. My ex did not like white flowers either, I never understood that one. It's not like the whole yard is in white, but a few whites add to the whole.

Too much white can leave a garden looking washed out, especially in strong sun. Many people copy white gardens like the famous one at Sissinghurst but fail to realize that that garden was actually called the grey, green and white garden, using large amounts of all three, and it also uses shade to create patches of light and dark, there is much more to it than just putting lots of white flowers together, It is best I think not to go for single colour gardens, unless you are sure you are very clever, and white is best used only as single highlights here and there.
