The Purple Loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria, is coming into flower in the garden now by the pond. It was once a common UK native but like a lot of wetland plants, modern drainage, river straightening and agro-chemicals are making it rare, so that you more often see it in gardens. It is big at five feet or more making quite a show.
Have this arouind my pond and every year transplant some to the canal system around us. Some places I did years ago now have massive banks of lovely purple
I always loved this plant, but, unfortunately, it is considered an invasive weed in our state and we are required by law to remove it from our ponds and creek areas.
It still makes me smile when I see a small patch blooming before it is removed...
It is classified as invasive here in Texas as well. I had come across it in a garden book or magazine and had thought it might be a beautiful plant to gtow, but it was not to be.
Pretty, the purples are generally my most favorite garden color.
