My Bay Laurel is coming into flower now. It is not usually thought of as a flowering shrub, but this year especially it is covered.

There was a south facing, cinder block, wall next to to my property and I planted this tree. It took off. At one point I had to climb on the roof of the business and prune the tree as it was going to get too large. The smell that wafted around the property when I did the pruning, wow. One issue I was concerned were the roots. There was a septic next to the wall perhaps 15' below (I was 5' above grade and the mail line ran below the grade). I asked my landscaping friend about the roots and he said to consult the 'plumber.' Makes sense since they are the ones that have to deal with invading roots. One plant that was always problematic were Junipers. They have long, water seeking roots and if one has the older ceramic pipes watch out. The picture shows a small tree next to the blooming Rhoddy. Beautiful little flowers. Are they aromatic? I wonder because I imagine the leaves are.

Bay Laurel is the original Laurel. The ones you buy at the stores are a hybrid bred for the strong flavor. Notice recipes say to remove the bay after cooking. With the weaker Bay Laurel one can leave it in for added flavor.
Yay! I actually just bought two baby Bay trees. Looking forward to never again buying dried up Bay leaves at exorbitant prices.

They grow quickly and if you give them a couple of years to establish, you will have more bay than you could ever use. Don't overdo it though, too much bay is not good for you.

@Fernapple thnx. It does tell us to remove the actual leaves. I have mostly only used Bay in Alfredo and in chicken soups and sauces.
