I recommend you read Arthur C. Clarke's 2010 - Odyssey two.
Here's a review.
I've read it at least twice...you've inspired me to read it again.
Very optimistic/realistic....although....to your point...we never achieved anything close to this yet...
And there's no refs to god in this read!

Many scientists have now realized that flying cars will be too energy-wasting. Much easier to create elevators to outer space and underground tunnels...
