Like Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land.
Except that in the NT, the whole human-instead-of-animal-sacrifice is utter bullshit because when an animal sacrifice is made to god, those seeking god's favor are the ones performing the sacrifice. In the NT, Jesus is sacrificed by the Romans. And come to think of it, the Romans fared pretty well after the crucifixion. The Jews and Christians, not so much...
