If folies à deux can grow to folies en masse and Folie à deux is a shared psychosis or shared delusional disorder, a psychiatric syndrome in which symptoms of a delusional belief and sometimes hallucinations are transmitted from one individual to another, I ask why are religions and the belief in them not classed as psychiatric illnesses?

The high holy grail of psychiatric illnesses is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, better known as the DSM-5. The Lasègue-Falret syndrome (with about six other names for the same thing, all in French) is not listed as an illness. For it to be listed as an illness, you'd need the DSM-4. They've revised the mighty tome which started out as a pamphlet.
Sort of like the revised edition of the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy revised their review of Earth from "harmless" to "mostly harmless."
