Mike died in '01. Although it will be 17 years this coming June, I often think of him.
He was sick for about 5 years before he died and was in much pain. I learned very quickly to hate the sight and smells of hospitals.
The week before he died he developed hiccups and after about 3 days he was exhausted. We tried everything we could think of to cure them. From drinking water from a glass backward, gulping water while holding your nose, breathing into a bag and a host of other just as useless cures. I don't know if the hiccups had anything to do with it or not but about 8 days later he was gone. Died in his sleep.
We had a lot of good times together, too many bad times but I loved him and I miss him.

It's been 16 years for me, January 2002 was when Matt passed. We were barely 42. I know the feeling of the hate of hospitals, though we were only in and out of them for 6 months.

We are close in age. I was 43 when Mike passed, he was 50. It is so hard to start over alone. We do what we have to do then we create a new normal.

@Betty You lose your whole life, your future. I'm still trying to regain my footing. Often I find myself remiss in general day-to-day chores that were my husband's responsibility. I have moved on, but there is never a day that passes without realizing, again, that he's gone.

@Kymmacg

He was a big part of your young adult life and those experiences shaped who you are now.

We learned things about ourselves and grew our empathy, compassion, and understanding. I think it made us better people.

Hi Betty, welcome to the group and thank you for sharing your story. I am so sorry to hear your husband suffered so long. He was a very lucky man to have had such a loving spouse to care for him and I'm sure he knew that. Don't you think that was a wonderful gift you gave him? I will always treasure the memory of our last month together. It was almost like helping a mother give birth in its significance. There were even moments of joy amid the sorrow. We all deserve a loving person to help us in that transition.
