I did a big search through versions of this song. Mary Black's is very nice but too commercial. When I perform on stage this song is always requested. I love it.
Well this is a better Mary Black version. I usually do it finger picking a solo classical guitar. My wife Jeannie used to join in the choruses.

Interesting. When I learned this song I was totally unaware of Country music. At the time I think most of Ireland was though they grew to love it. Country music and bluegrass both derive from so-called Celtic music.
I too know this song pretty well, also having sung it many times. I did know that it was an old English tune, not Irish, as FB has stated. It doesn’t matter though as any nationality of singer can sing it, just not misappropriate it. I prefer the first version you posted. I like Mary Black, but not so much singing this.

The song is not Irish. It was composed in 1830 by Charles Jeffrys & Sidney Nelson & published in Blake's Young Flutist 1833.

Allendale is a village in Northumberland, England.
@FrayedBear I accept your corrections fully. I never believed it to be an Irish song. And I have been in Allendale. As for me, well I just love the song!
