I’m sticking quite close to home today with a post of an Irish folk band which was founded in Slane, Co. Meath in 1965. They comprised of the Johnston siblings, Adrienne, Lucy & Michael, and quite often included guest musicians and singers. The song I’ve chosen here is The Curragh of Kildare and includes Northern Irish musician Paul Brady in the lineup.
The Curragh in Co. Kildare is a 5,000 acre plain to the south and west of Dublin and was the site of a very large British Army Camp and training ground in the 19th century when it was used along with Aldershot in Hampshire, England as a main training camp for the Crimean War. The Curragh is now the centre of the horse racing industry in Ireland, Kildare hosting most of the country’s stud farms and horse training stables. The Irish Grand National is run at The Curragh Racecourse annually.
I've known this group and song since they came out with their first LP in about '65. I recognised Brady. Yes I think of the Curragh of Kildare as a horse racing area.
Very good listening. Their singing reminds me of Peter, Paul & Mary. Thanks for the extra info. I find it fascinating to learn things about another country from someone who actually lives there and isn't a politician, etc.
Glad you appreciated.
