An implication of this is that our 21 trillion dollar debt would be a lot more, except for all the funding cutbacks and resulting price increases that we have experienced in so many of our public goods and services. For example, college education is far less subsidized by government funding than it used to be, so that tuitions have gone through the roof. Politicians may give us tax cuts, but they are often offset by other price increases so that we are no better off. And, of course, the poor and nearly poor are usually hit the hardest.

Right. I'm not sure where exactly you're drawing a line on that. But also locally, we have been picking up the tab from national cuts also on many aspects. Private and charter schools eating up much of our local school funding also. We just had here in Ohio a big deal with an online school which was caught over charging us. Both by actual enrollment and online time.
When I went to college and then graduated in 2003, tuition for the school I went to was about $9,000 a year. Now it's about $23,000 a year at the same school 15 years later.
