What's the best pickup line you've heard?
DavidLaDeau comments on Apr 3, 2018:
Mine of course, " You look like a girl that doesn't like one liners." Actually I never relied on that bullcrap. I simply showed interest in the person I was talking to...primitive but honest and effective.
As a former Jehovah's Witness, I'm curious how this community views the group.
DavidLaDeau comments on Apr 19, 2018:
As a historian it is simply like any other religion. I am concerned about it as I was I involved with an extremist fundamentalist Christian church when I was young. I was controlled just as much as any JW, we were taught that we were normal and the JWs were a cult. It was the old pot calling the kettle black. In some respects such as the lack of belief in the trinity the JWs are much closer to some of the earliest Christian beliefs, on other accounts such as insisting on calling the Abrahamic God Jehovah, they like any other religion have simply made stuff up.
From There to Here
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 25, 2020:
I simply stoppef listenong to the preachers as I realized that every faith had different beliefs and vould not be right. I then spent years alone without any outside influence in intensive study of the Bible. I did not care what people said I wanted to know what god said. It becane apparent that the Bible conflicted with itself so much that the Christian God could not be real.

Thank you, I have read so manybooks like that. An entire book which you just explained well in a few sentences. I think the idea is right on and aligns well with the psychological studies I have done. Frankly, religion does not require thought, It is reliant on passive thought, while science relies on active thinking which is much more difficult. The default is passive thinking.
I have studied religions for 5 years and now i got my answers that god doesnt fitt in our reality .

Define Cult.... Define Religion.... Describe the differences:
DavidLaDeau comments on Aug 8, 2019:
Cult from a historians perspective simply means a sect of a pre-existing religion. Cult in modern colloquial meaning describes particularly controling or harmful religious groups. Religion is based on a god head, and has specific rites and rituals accociated with a given dieity.

Was there a reason why you chose "Agnostic" for this site?
DavidLaDeau comments on Jan 6, 2018:
I didn't. I was invited to this site and have made no bones about being an atheist. I do enjoy communicating with the agnostics on this site as most tend to be skeptics as I am myself.
I just became aware of a brilliant experiment that some 4chan users did one time.
DavidLaDeau comments on Jan 10, 2018:
Brilliant! Next time how about "Its ok to be human" Would theist or animal rights activists get upset? This is exactly why the American Atheists ad campaigns are so successful. They put up a simple sign and people go nuts. The strategy is simple. When they do make a big deal about it, the media swoops in and conversions begin.
What is the best bible rebuttal for John 3:16?
DavidLaDeau comments on Jan 23, 2018:
Eternal life? Who has ever accomplished this? One must have lived forever to be able to say that one did or that it is possible. So time must end to say one has lived forever. If god is eternal and time has not ended then god has not lived forever. This being said how can such a promise be made?

I do not nor have I had a familiar. I am an apistevist-I make no desicions based on faith. I have had strong emotional attachment to other animals(yes i am an ape). There is nothing wrong or strange about having such emotional attachments. It means you are human. I hope you you have made peace with your loss.

Do you know the difference between Agnostic & Atheist?
DavidLaDeau comments on Jan 30, 2018:
Agnostic is a knowledge statement. I can not claim to know that a god does not exist if the definition of god is something that can not be detected or comprehended. I am therefore an agnostic. Atheist is a belief statement- I do not believe there is a god, or I do not believe in god. Most atheist are also agnostic. In my case I can not claim to know what I by definition can not know. So I am agnostic. But I do not spend my time wondering if there could be a magic unicorn god living in my butt. I am with all of my knowledge, experience and understanding 100% certain there i no god, so I am an atheist.

To me, Sin is a religious construct and is ultimately meaningless.
DavidLaDeau comments on Apr 26, 2018:
Why did you have to make me preach??? To have a better understanding of the Bible one must understand that the words Sin and Evil have the same meanings. Sin/Evil 1) The humanist meaning- That which causes harm 2) The Godly meaning- What ever pisses off God. This can be arbitrary, and can change passage to passage. It may mean one or both. The important thing to see here is that the Bible is so inconsistent that you are completely correct. The meanings do loose credibility all together.

DavidLaDeau comments on May 16, 2020:
First of all Paul was very likely to have been a historical figure unlike most of the charactors in the new testiment. He is thought to have had a limited education judging from his primative writing style which is why we know that 6 of the 13 letters attributed to Paul were actually later forgeries. He is thought to have had many of his letters writen for him. They would have been likley written on velum scrolls. Later, by many many years, copies of copies were then put into codices. While Christianity does like to take credit for innumerable things they did not do, the codices are actually attributed to the Christian movement. The reasons for this is unknown, but scholars believe that they simply found it easier to transport and edit one page at a time rather than a scroll that could be 8 ft. In length. So books as we know them today are actually of Christian orgin.

DavidLaDeau comments on Jan 17, 2018:
We as humans unfortunately have the capacity for racism. But let's really look at it from a biological perspective. What happens if a man from Africa has a child with a Norwegian woman. You get a human. What happens if you have a woman from China and she has a child with an Brazilian. You get a human. When a poodle breeds with a pit bull you get a dog. The dogs don't care about "breed" they see another dog. A cow brown cow is a cow to a black and white cow. We are all human and scientists now say race does not actually exist in the context we understand it. Some traits are passed down from one generation to another as part of the evolutionary process but we are still all human. All we are left with is our actions and how we interact with other humans. This may be what we call character.

Anyone besides me have questions about the shroud of Turin, or the question of the Stigmata?
DavidLaDeau comments on Apr 29, 2018:
The words miracle and magic share the same meaning, That is something that takes place outside the laws of physics. If something is outside the laws of physics it by definition is not real. As humans we naturally are inclined to assign agency to any thing we do not understand. It is also known as the "god of the gaps fallacy. "I don't know, therefore God." The shroud of Turin and Stigmata have in no way been proven by science to have any validity concerning the claims of believers. Their mystery is really just hype propagated by believers. Let's say that science for some reason seemed the validate the claims but we still did not know their origins. Would it actually mean that they were supernatural? By definition the answer would be no. If it exist or has been created outside of natural means by magic it by is not real. So what are we left with? We simply don;t know. It is perfectly fine to say I don't know. I don;t know the origins or the universe but I'm not going to pretend to know what I do not know and attribute it to a magic god in the sky.

Do you think that religion has played overall good or bad role for human during this Covid pandemic?
DavidLaDeau comments on May 16, 2020:
Really? Its a good thing that people are going to church infecting each other and taking the infection to work and out shopping. It is a good thing that they share in many cases one cup for the entire congregation while drinking their gods blood thus making it very likely that everyone becomes infected in the church, agian so they can spread the virus to countless others. It is a good thing that they are spreading conspiracy theries about microchips bing put into the vaccine and that the vaccine will be satanic. It os a good thing that many will refuse a vaccine making herd immunity much more difficult. It is a good thing that many preachers are blaming the virus on fags, lesbos, cross dressers and atheist. It is a good thing that religious leaders are teaching that god (the bringer of the virus) will keep them safe even though they have a much higher risk of dying due to their belief in a sky fairy. Lets just say bad role.

Who’s married to one?
DavidLaDeau comments on Aug 18, 2019:
I was an atheist f9r my entire 20 year marriage. When we first got married I did not identify as one but I knew I did not believe in a god. My wife identified as a Christian but did not care or really believe either. I never mentioned that I did not really believe as it never came up until about our 16th year when my son was sent to the principles office for tell8ng his teacher he was an atheist after she refered to him as a Christian. No one knew I was an atheist until I came to his defence, I kept it to myself and no one ever had asked me. Then she became super christian at least vocally and it was horrable. For other reasons about 4 years later we got a divorce. I did have one conversation where I used street epistimology to help her realize that she did not believe. After that she still would not admit it to anyone and deneyed the outcome of that conversation, but she accepted my sons and my lack of belief. BTW I am now very careful that anyone that I might date knows and understands my lack of belief and I simply would not be able to fully trust one who lives their lives and makes decisions based on fairy tales. Recently on one dating site I have had a few females respond to my profile that is clearly marked atheist and I address my lack of belief in my profile. They have been marked Christian/other. I will have to investigate what they mean by other as there is also not marked on their profile agnostic, spiritual but not religious that they did not indicate. We shall see.

When one has a broken heart it is internal, that is the one who has the broken heart is still giving their emotions to the other person. I do not mean to sound callused as I have suffered this also as we are human. The sad truth is that with anyone who suffers a broken heart it is their problem not anyone elses. Think of why your heart is broken and what you can do about it. Don't let another have that kind of control over you. Easily said i admit, not easily done.

DavidLaDeau comments on Apr 22, 2018:
Our minds have evolved to see patterns. If you look at almost anything you can see a human face in it if you try. The phenomena you have described deals with Causation-the belief that things have a cause, and Correlation-the belief that two similar events are somehow tied together. In a primative example an very ancient ancestor sees leaves rustle in a bush. The cause could be the wind or a lion. If the person runs or defends themself they lived if was a lion. If not they died. If it was only the wind they survive to reproduce and we get to have this conversation. It does correlate that the leaves rustle when the loin brushes up agaist them or the wind blows. If we do not know the cause we are hard wired to "assign" a cause due to how we evolved. As a result of this we do see coincidence or synchronicity where is is not real or factual as the events may be completely independent of one another. We now normally do not see leaves rustle and think "therefore loin", neither should we look at synchronicity and think "therefore God" as many theist do, not that you have made that particular suggestion.
I believe in the power of faith.
DavidLaDeau comments on Jan 2, 2018:
The problem here is the word faith. In this case you are using it as optimism, or confidence. You are not using it in the context of believing without evidence. You have confidence because you have done this many times before. You are not believing without any factual evidence as it has happened before. As it has happened you have both the confidence and optimism that it will occur again. Faith in the religious context is simply believing in the unbelievable. You do not do this. Words often have different meanings and we must be careful not to switch meanings and get the different meanings mixed up and out of context.
Odd religious excuses
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 17, 2018:
It actually came from my wife. When she found out that my son and I were atheist she said we were going to hell. That in itself is not that odd. It's just that she has not once gone to church since i've known her for over 20 years, She has never prayed that I know of, and not once expressed any concern for the condition of our souls. She has never done or said anything ever since. She has not demonstrated any behavior that indicates she actually believes we are going to hell. In other words, she is an atheist and does not know it.
I have met someone who desires me.

Life is what you make of it, make a life of it. People can be bad or good. You don't know until you make the dive how thrilling it will be or how the water will feel. We don't have a magic sky daddy to make it all right so we have to take the risk or crawl in a hole.

The problem with the freedom from religion foundation is it favors people that support religious freedom heavily over people that don't. Unfortunately as it stands right now the conservatives can’t win without the support of the predominantly conservative religious right wing. For that very reason I can never bring myself to support the FFRF or American Atheist as they are overwhelmingly dominated by the liberal’s which I consider to be even more radical and dangerous than the religious. Please forgive my edit for the purpose of clarification. The remaining unedited portion made your bias very clear. What was unaddressed in this emotional post was WHY you consider organizations that stand up for unbelievers to be more dangerous than the religious. This site is called agnostic.com. It is a community of non-believers or the undecided. If you wish to make an important case I would love to hear it as I may learn something, Facebook is a great place for a pointless rant...just sayin

The long affects of religion...
DavidLaDeau comments on Jul 28, 2018:
It takes a long time. The good thing is that you have taken the first step. One must realize that Religion has had and does have an effect on our thinking. Once that is accomplished we can then try to catch it and think rationally.
What if you had proof that there were no gods?
DavidLaDeau comments on Mar 9, 2018:
This is a diicult question to answer. The laws of logic would have to change also. If I could prove by definition what can not be proven it would get interesting. But lets play! Lets say that the Jewish God told the whole world at once "The Jesus thing is made up, Worship me the Jewish God in the Jewish way." Lets say he did this in a way that everyone recieved this as a personal message they could hear in thie own language(even the deaf and they could understand it. A great indisputable miracle, right? No. Many Christians or maybe most of them would become even more religious. sociology has demonstrated this again and again. Many would belive it was Satan trying to fool us and allowed by God to "test" us. They would become more ardent Christians. I do not have what I could not have, the ability to prove the unproveable. But I do have something of great value. The Bible. I can prove that the Bible was written by man. That it has a definate evolution of theology both within Judaism and in Christianity. I can prove that the authors had different and conflicting ideas. I can prove that it contains numerous forgeries. On a very bad day I can prove its very fallible. Would I tell anyone? I just did and will always do so at every opportunity. The reason is, I was brainwashed as a child and became a Young Earth creationist, Fundamentalist wacko. No matter how much I was indoctrinated It could not stop my thirst for knowlege, I wanted to know everything I could about God. As I studied, I came to the conclusion that it was made up . I believe it is very unhealthy for people to live thier lives based on what is not real. I do what I do to help others escape the bonds of religion as I had no one to help me. I had to do it on my own, in isolation. It is my hope that with my help the transition to reality will be much easier for others. Rant complete.
does desire to convert someone to atheistic belief sometimes undercut our abiding love for science?
DavidLaDeau comments on Dec 30, 2017:
I do not desire to "convert" anyone to atheism. I do have a very strong, irresistible desire to inspire people to question everything and understand how they know what they know. Is what I believe just cus some guy said so or is their factual evidence to support his claim? When people actually stop to take the time to understand why they believe what they do believe it leads them to solid decision making. I do not have to agree with people's ideas or like their ideas. What I am concerned about is that their reasoning is not based on myth or fairy tales. In this since I am an Apistevist- I do not make decisions based on faith. It is just a very bad idea to do so and I encourage people to avoid doing so. This does however end up making people become atheist.

DavidLaDeau comments on Aug 10, 2019:
Early middle english simply sounds more religious. Movies today often have sages speak jibberish just forthat reason. Antiquity seems to somehow assert validity. I would be impressed if they could produce an actual god. Perhaps they could use early middle english to speak one into existance, everyone knows thats what Jesus spoke.

DavidLaDeau comments on Jul 11, 2018:
You well know how liberal many atheist tend to be. Frankly, Liberal politics tend to appeal to humanist. I am Libertarian. I agree with many liberal ideas, in believe that conservative ideas tend to be better in economic areas. Libertarian ideas are often more appealing than either.
