I used to live in a small town of 40k people. Being the outspoken individual I am, it was expected that I was either going to be run out of town on a rail, or elected mayor, and it was probably 50/50 that it could go either way.

I volunteer with local government (things like Library Board, etc), and just had a meeting with the mayor of the town I now live in. He tried to talk me into running for city council. So, who knows?

Remember, local government is what's important. Those elections that only like 5% of people turn out for are the IMPORTANT ones. Local tax rates, what textbooks the school board approves, those sort of things are MUCH more important than who sits in the Oval Office. You are MUCH more likely to deal with local police than the FBI. Vote in those elections, and consider running for the tax board, the school board, city council, anything like that. You very well might run unopposed, and actually effect change where it matters.

I'd think about it more seriously if we didn't have good local politicians here. It's time-consuming and expensive and I'll leave it to people with more energy and money.

I considered it, but it would have been expensive and I've had had to talk to people, lots of people, and every day and a good deal of the day, and it's expensive. I don't think I'm cut out to be a candidate.

I'm guessing only the middle classes can afford to run.

I ran for mayor of portland but having to make a living was a problem. Last time i dropped out but got 2200 votes
