I'm from Sydney, Australia, and a new member. I'm curious to see how many people on here have visited Australia, would like to, or don't want to! Feel free to comment on your reasons why or why not (including the terrifying stories about snakes, spiders and sharks....)

It's on my bucket list of things I will likely never achieve. Being on an airplane that long just doesn't work for me.

2

I have many friends from Australia. I've always wanted to travel the world and Australia is pretty high on my list!

2

In high school we had to write a 5 year plan as part of the English class I was in. I believe mine consisted of becoming a marine biologist and moving to Australia. My complete lack of science and math skills squashed that dream quickly. I’d still love to visit though!

Have a son and his wife living in Sydney. They love it down there. I’ve visited a couple of times, great country.

Took a backpacking trip from Rockhampton to Adelaide. So much beauty. So want to go back.

What time of year did you go? I have heard that it's disgustingly hot in the summer. That would be a great trip I'm sure. I should add that to my list!

@Sherisey I'm from Tucson where it's been 105°. i love the heat. It was from October to December. I really don't remember heat being an issue, except in Brisbane. Stick to the coast and you don't even think of the heat, with the so so beautiful beaches.

I've been to one of the airports, but that doesn't really count. I backpacked around new Zealand for a few months in 1989, and had to change planes in Australia. I'd love to visit, but I can't afford it right now. Also, getting there is a drag. Time and money are the only things holding me back from visiting. To me, it has always had the reputation of being a wonderful place in every way.

I just picked up a book at the library yesterday that is set in Australia. As soon as I finish the one I'm reading now, I'll get it started. It's called The Dry, by Jane Harper. Perhaps I'll have questions for you about its portrayal of your country... 🙂

you came all this way and just visited an airport! why???

Hit me up with any question you care to ask 🙂

@ashatan42 I was young. 21. My boyfriend at the time and I were a couple of broke kids looking to backpack around New Zealand, so that was our destination. Before I met the boyfriend (John), he had befriended a New Zealander at a summer job here in the US. By the time I met him, he was saving up for the trip to NZ. The friend had said "if you're ever in NZ, you have a place to stay." I don't think the friend really imagined John would show up, to be honest. 🙂 But by then, I'd met John and I tagged along. We stayed with the friend for a week or two, then set off on our own. Broke as dirt, we did odd jobs for food money and slept in a tiny pup-tent. It was an adventure!

@carlyhorton sounds like it! What a great trip to do in your early 20s! New Zealand is a fantastic country to explore, smaller than Australia, great outdoor adventures and wonderful, friendly people

@ashatan42 Yes! The people were astonishing. And what a wide variety of landscapes and geography! The top of the north island felt like the Carribean and the bottom of the south island felt like Scandinavia! And there was everything in-between. I've always expected that Australia would hold the same charm. Maybe a bit more spread out. 🙂 But I imagine the people to be very similar in their warmth and friendliness.

I visited the Sunshine Coast a few years ago and would love to go back. Beautiful place and the nicest people.

Basically I want to see every different place, and every different culture, that I can. So if you ask 'would you like to visit X?' then WHEREVER X is, the answer is 'yes' unless there are actual reasons NOT to go there!

Check out Nas Daily in Facebook. He does 1 minute videos each day from different places where he is traveling. Great stuff. He's been to OZ

I'd love to! Got a couple internet-friends over that way that I'm hoping to meet face-to-face with someday, too

2

Would love to visit Australia every winter here in northeastern U.S. As a sky/stargazer, would enjoy seeing new constellations and the strange feeling of looking North for the midday sun.

It's on my bucket list

I even have some family down under.

I have a friend who lived in Adelaide for six months. She said it was the most freeing, amazing experience of her life and she had lived in Paris previously. A large compliment, that. I personally have always wanted to go but haven’t had the funds and/or the time. I’m a film and TV buff and am impressed with the overall creativity, acting, writing and production values that transmit over here via my Netflix queue. I quickly devour any new series of shows such as Rake or Miss Fisher. Someday I’ll get there...

Those are two of my Netflix faves (Rake and Miss Fisher) - on high rotation 🙂

I've been there many times, I've worked on cruise ships for 15 years and Princess had me down there every 6 months. The people ars some of the warmest, most genuine I've met. Can't wait to go again.

What a fantastic job to have!

I was there a few years ago and would like to go back next spring (our spring, your fall!). I have a daughter there and didn’t get to see her this year. I need a traveling companion!
😉 The trip was absolutely horrible, but worth it if you stay at least three weeks. Definitely a fantastic travel adventure!

Yes you do need a lot of time to see even a small amount of it - there is a lot of empty space it the middle!

2

I hear it is nice. And right next door to New Zealand. (-;

UnZud is nice too, I guess 🙂

2

I worked on P&O Aus ships for 7yrs.

More luck to you! How did you find that job?

@ashatan42 I'd been DJing as a side job for many years

There have always been a few places ive dreamed about seeing. Australia is at the top of that list. There are 3 things that usually interest me. Weird animals (this includes bugs and fish and birds and all that), weird plants, and old-school civilizations. Y'all seem to have all 3 covered.

I haven't yet, most definitely I want to.... The closest I have been is Singapore and south of Malaysia. It's not a matter (of) if but of when. If you can provide nuggets of good stuff only locals know then that would be awesome.

I've been, when I was in the Marine Corps. I loved it. The people there were wonderful toward me

Hi, Ashatan,

Sidney is my favorite city in the world, after Songkhla, Thailand, where I'm currently living.

Definitely on my bucket list. My mother always wanted to go and that got me interested. Unfortunately, she has never been and now probably won’t make.
I have a friend that moved down to Melbourne a few years ago and hope to visit him someday.
