So if you want the truth, ask a bibliophile?

As the year grows to a close, I don't foresee adding any more to the list of books I read in 2017. Churchill’s Trial: Winston Churchill and the Salvation of Free Government by Larry Arnn is my 87th book of the year, and like many others on this year's list it is an audiobook (this one read by Wayne Campbell). While the number of books I've read this year has been pretty consistent with other years, what has changed this year is that for the first time audiobooks outnumber the ebooks and printed books. I blame all those irresistable Daily Deals at Audible.com.

I prefer printed books, audible books put me to sleep or my mind wanders off. When I am reading I focus totally on the page. My kids used to ask for stuff when I was reading because I'd usually say yes to make them go away, and then realize about 20 minutes later what I did. I have read over 40 books this year. I keep track on Goodreads.

Or how about "that's your education talking".

I've been reading books for as long as I can remember. I think I began loving books around 3rd grade. Now I'm 46 and I read almost every day, about 4 books a month, and own about a thousand books (though wish I had room for far more).

I'd actually love to open a secondhand bookstore someday but it seems uncertain if I ever will get the chance.

I remember being so engrossed in a book in second grade I did not hear the teacher call my name. She came to my desk and slapped her hand on it to get my attention. My grandmother gave me "Heidi" by Johanna Spyri for my birthday when I turned 6. I LOVED that book. I still have it. I used to collect books, but post divorce when I had to move my stuff I sold most of the books, and I mostly borrow from my local library now. While I was married we moved hundreds of our books and kids books. It's expensive!

So right! You can learn a lot about a person by simply asking, "What are you reading these days?". If you get a blank stare...

I am going to have to remember that phrase! I used to ask what was the last book they read.

I know my Bible so well, I use appropriate references. Some are really fitting. And I agree with that meme. Books make you grow.

I could not agree with you more! I only wish that my vision were good enough to allow me to read as much as I did for most of my life.

Audio books.

@MsOliver I might try it. I have tried large print books, but they don't solve the problem. My macular degeneration leaves me with a blind spot in the center of the field of vision in both eyes, and causes distortion in other areas of the field of vision -- which combine to make reading a struggle.

@GoldenMean Have tried audio books and enjoy them, but most of my reading was in the non-fiction areas, and a lot of the books I would want to read are not available in audio=books that I can find.

I don't read as much as used to. Direct and on-line research and communication about politics, social theories and current events has become important to me.
