Where does HGTV find these people?!

"Hi we are a 20something couple expecting our first child. We currently own a 4 bed 3 bath 20,000 Sq foot house. It's just too small for our soon-to-be 3 person house."

I physically hate you.

America... They find them in America.

I'm in America where's my gigantic house I can't possibly afford with my strange hobby turned career

@LadyAlyxandrea Waiting for you to realize that the American dream is a fucking lie; that we've been sold a bill of goods, that the path we're on is completely unsustainable, and that the quicker you take the red pill and unplug from the matrix, the more content you'll be. Don't look too them with envy because they're on their own path to self destruction.

Sorry if I got a little hyped, but 20,000 ft^2 is too small of a space for 3!? They can get all the way the fuck out of here with that shit! That's the type of greed and gluttony that will bury us under our own refuse.

@LadyAlyxandrea Again, sorry for the language, but things like that irritate me.

"This Old House" USED to be the go-to low buck reno show. Now they are just the same. But with a few more how to tips.

They'd probably need extra room for the 9-person live-in cleaning crew for a house that size. Even if the house is 2000 sq. ft, it's still a massive amount of space for 2 adults and a child. My house is 1800 sq. ft (two storeys, so total of 3600 sq. ft. of living space), 6 bedrooms, 2 baths, plenty of space for two humans and 53 indoor critters.

I live in an unfinished basement with no kitchen and no bathroom sink

Gah! And worse with the "our budget is x, but we'll blow by that with dumb shit and things that would have turned up in the inspection but it doesn't matter because our parents will give us more anyway".

Grrrrr.

I'd love to see them do shows where the budget is firm. Or even remodel but with purpose, taking dogs of the neighborhood with block grants and seeing what can be done on tight budgets. Classic rehab not "these things are fashionable right now so we're going to put them in at incredibly high cost even though arty types made them fashionable in spaces where they had to make do with what they had".

I'm looking at you, shiplap walls and polished concrete.

If you have Amazon Prime, there is a fun remodeling show on there called "Great Taste, no money." They really do spend from a few hundred to a few thousand. With generally great results.

@MikeInBatonRouge Thanks! I'll check it out.

I like HGTV, especially while I was in house shopping mode recently. But I had the same reaction. The remedy is to watch a bunch of tiny house shows. You don't have to GO tiny to appreciate the efficiencies and creative economizing ideas. Yay!
ps: Now that I just bought a house ...938 sq ft...I can't stop watching gardening shows. Wee! ?

Agreed. Less is more.

@AmiSue awesome! Don't mind if I do. Thanks for the invite!

I'd believe a 20,000 sq ft house.

They probably mistyped the square footage . More likely ment 2,000 sq. ft . that Dad bought for them .

How about “I’m a single income worker with unaffordable rent, need to downgrade to a one bedroom, trashy apartment complex so I can afford to pay the government 45% of my income and be able to eat and have a few dollars for myself each month.” Where did the realism go? Stop showing elitists to the lower class and promoting it as normal.

If you're that poor , you should be paying the government less than 20 % of your income . You may also want to consider , moving to a different location . I understand , for instance living in NYC , means you have to pay a fortune for a small trashy abode , while living in , for Pennsylvania , would allow you to live in a virtual mansion for the same price .(and you could eat , too . )

@Cast1es 25% of my income is garnished for student loans

I hate them, too

I totally agree! If those TV folks represent the majority of this country then apparently I've been living under a rock for a long time. 🙂

That must be a typo? A house that size is a... shopping mall! And a big one!
