Name a few of the things you do that run against the grain with the culture where you live. It would be fun to compare notes and see what weirdness we have in common with other members.

I live in the US, but:
. I don't follow football or baseball.
. I don't like eating doughnuts or drinking soda.
. I pronounce "disgusting" with a "g" like "gust" - not with a "c" like "cussed".

I live in Texas and l don't like guns.

I live in the US.
I'm male.
It's not possible for me to care less about sports. Any sports.
I cry when I feel it. Openly. In public. And I don't give a fuck what anyone thinks.
I treat all people as equals. Except tRump supporters. I treat them as the complete and utterly deplorable morons they are.
I wear crocs when I want to. And I want to every time it's hot.
I'm honest to a fault.
I hug my male friends.

I also hug my male friends.

7

I walk upright
I talk in complete sentences
I do not have any DUI's or arrests to my name
I do not have camo colored clothes (except my military BDU's)

  • I live in Trump country

But do you watch Duck Dynasty though?

@jujuofthesea oh hell no!

@Darthpug Good man! ?

Dude you remind me of myself a little. What branch were you in?

@MrChange Air Force

@Darthpug awesome! Same here. I only did six years. I was a Loadmaster/air craft mechanic.

I live in West Michigan and I do not care about my lawn, sport or drinking alcohol. I do care about politics, social justice, the environment and education including comprehensive sex ed. I am pro choice and antiTrump. I do not drink pop either( we call soda pop here). I do try to avoid using words I know people will not understand. I care more about not being in debt then I care about how new my cars are, how big or new my house is or how I dress. I like my weird and everyone who does not like it can kiss my entire ass.

I teach evolutionary biology and climate science.

Blasphemy 🙂

I live in the US.
Am vegan
A humanist
Don’t have a mobile-iPad though
Read books (ok mostly ebooks from the library)
Only subscribe to one magazine-The New Yorker
Hate women’s magazines
Very very liberal
Love the color of darker skins than mine(Caucasian)-A very strange word btw
I have 3 favorite sports-skipping stones, throwing a frisbee, shooting baskets in my driveway

Melind Level 6 July 13, 2018

You are stranger than me 🙂

I am a native Floridian. That said I could care less about any team in any sport. I do not vote rethuglican and I am a progressive in my politics. I have been on six continents and i am also anti war. This puts me at odds with about fifty percent of Brevard County. Oh, and I read banned books!.

BillF Level 7 July 13, 2018

What are the banned books?

@jujuofthesea Around here anything that has to do with evolution and kids books that are positive to what is happening around them, sex, divorce, drugs, eyc. Oh and any history that doesn't say "Merica" is special!

@jujuofthesea Lots of em. [en.wikipedia.org]

Many on this list are a very good read.

Thanks for the link. A lot of good info there.

I live in a very conservative area of the U.S., however, I’ve never:
-shot a gun
-voted Republican
-played golf
-watched an NFL game without my eyes glazing over

A USA citizen, born and raised and now live in Texas.
I have no interest in sporting events of any kind and do not watch any.
I am diabetic and do not eat donuts, most sweets and drink sodas.
I do not own a gun nor feel I need one.
I do not drink alcohol or smoke tobacco or weed or do drugs of any sort and never have.
I do everything I can to avoid the healthcare system in my country.
I love ALL my human family. No one is excluded. There are some that I do not like however.
I am A-theist and Anti-theist.
I am that I am.

You are a good man!

I go out with men. I don't watch Faux Noise. I believe it's none of your business if somebody has an abortion. I believe it's none of my business who marries who. I don't worship high school sports. I'm a Democrat caught in a state full Republicans. I say for sale not for sell.

4

In the states, but:
I follow no sports.
I dislike eating donuts or drinking soda.
I defend reason over superstition.

Although I was in the military:
I am NOT a Republican or theist.

You're my long lost twin.

I live in (near) Liverpool UK.
I don't like the Beatles.
I don't like any competitve sports I can think of, though I'll bet 100's a week on them.
I like rowing, climbing and yoga but can't do any of them due to the route the surgeon took feeding a fecking impotent cable into my heart. I'm actively avoiding @Melind until she agrees to some written protocols concerning frisbees.
I don't do food. Not in any dangerous condition way, it just doesn't excite me. My weight often goes up and down by about a stone quite easily depending on if I remember to eat properly.
I smoke a bit of tobacco even though my risk is more than a lot of yours from it. I used to smoke probably way too much of the strong THC rich indoor farmed canabbis that's about all you can find over here now, then I got a wake up call which left me with blood pressure issues and will have a very small amount on special occasions now. I miss it like I'd miss suddenly not having a bed.
I stop sometimes when writing these things to look at other posts for inspiration, then I write some more.
I shot a rifle at a target once in army cadets. I missed. That was enough for me thanks. About that time one went missing from the armoury. They found it a while later in an IRA cache!
I don't have any issues with how Americans spell "colour", "aluminium" etc. Language is a fluid thing and we have very little control over it's evolution, but it's interesting to watch.
I prefer women with smaller tits, but it's no deal breaker.
I'm 5'8" (7.5" on an honest day), an fine with taller women, understand if they're not fine about it, and rarely give it any thought.
I used to be dead, no pulse, no breathing, but they fixed that, put me in ice for a few days, then woke me up and rolled away the stone so to speak.
I've slept through quite a bad earthquake.
I'm a little bit brain damaged these days. I forget the odd thing and my facial recognition is wrecked. I have trouble telling Trump and Boris Johnson apart, in fact most of you I don't recognise from one profile pic to the next. It's worrying to think I could arrive at a date and sit with completely the wrong woman because she had brown hair and earrings or something! That passes after meeting someone about 3 times but still awkward.
I don't like the prime minister or her opponent.
I don't know what I'm here for it seems to change daily with my moods/experiences.
I'm hopefully coming to USA in a few months. Lock up your preachers!

Salo Level 7 July 13, 2018

That was a fun read. Thank you. 🙂

@jujuofthesea very welcome ☺

I live in Eastern NM (diet Texas)
Being gay and not subscribing to religion is pretty against the grain in this area, but then again, so is avid reading, so that's not saying much.

I'll have to remember Diet Tx 🙂

3

I live in a fairly generic suburb less than an hour's ride from NYC. I'm an anomaly here, a New Jersey resident who feels equally comfortable on the streets of NYC; unlike the countless commuters who go in, do their job, and head home, I'm just as comfortable as the city locals when it comes to hanging out and getting around -- and unlike most New Yorkers, equally comfortable getting around in the suburbs. So, I am a rarity: a NY/NJ hybrid. Unlike many people on either side of the Hudson, I don't view the river as the Continental Divide.

3

I don't speak with a shanty Irish accent.

I don't go to mass.

I don't participate in..or follow Irish sports.

Apart from that and whatever I have probably forgotten I buy into the rest..great culture..very very green and pleasant land..I even have green eyes! ??

3

I live in a wealthy (see also; Republican) and military based area of California, but...

I don't like what the military stands for.
I am a far leftist progressive.
I am ok with high taxes if it means we are all closer the rest of the evolved world (i.e. single payer, free public education, family leave, etc.).
I do not want that god damned wall.

Also, just as far as California in general goes...

I don't want leave, I love it here. (About 80% of people I meet want leave the state if they can)
I am equally in love with the beach as I am the mountains.
I don't believe in zodiac signs.
Neither I, nor my parents, are wealthy.

I know how you feel, I work for the Gov on a military base too.

3

I respect, revere & encourage quiet. Unlike the neighbors who run ATVs, wind chimes, loud music on outdoor speakers with bad mariachi music, rev Harleys & use multiply combustible engine tools.
I restore habitat instead of mowing acres of the monoculture lawn
I do not have night time bug zappers with do not kill mosquitoes but do kill moths & other nocturnal insects
I do not permit my cats to run loose without a bright orange collar & numerous bells so the birds have a chance in hell to escape the murderous buggers that cats are
I remove invasive species instead of permitting them to go to seed & infect the rest of America
(I have made progress in suppressing some of the behavior thru the police, my confrontations, diplomacy, encouragement & threats. Help!)

American cis straight white man in Tennessee but Ill make no case for it.
Dont care about sports, cars/trucks, muddin’, don't like sweet tea, have never caught a fish (though Id like to), and am an educated city slicker at heart. To say nothing of my ideas on politics and religion being diametrically opposed to everyone around me. Over half my best friends have been gay, black, mexican or two of the three. I own a . 22 rifle and am in favor of stricter gun control. My aim is good enough already so I practice with ninja weapons instead.

Despite being indoctrinated with all the makings of a MAGA moron growing up, sudden access to the internet and message boards like these resulted in my becoming more similar to a commonwealth/UK citizen in my sense of self deprecation, humor, and world politics. My ideas on mental and physical fitness come more from eastern cosmology, philosophy and yoga/martial arts. Jesus and football have only ever let me down. Im a stoner from the D.A.R.E. generation. Basically the internet, psychedelics, a contrarian streak, and a diverse college experience saved me from becoming the ultimate collection of good ol boy stereotypes.

Love your thesis! ?

Being an atheist pretty much runs counter to the culture anywhere. I'm in Texas but can't stand football (which was great fun when I was a public school band director). I ride a recumbent bike which is odd in most places. For many years I lived in a small Texas town and I'm pretty sure I was the only one there owning a DVD of Eraserhead (and other "interesting" movies). Being a jazz musician also puts you on the outside in most places.

You're eclectic, that's something to be proud of.

I have a great dislike of watching all competitive sports.
I can’t stand sushi.
I don’t like guns.
I catch and release any bugs found in my home.
I don’t like the vast majority of reality television.
I am having trouble adjusting to all the hugging done in California as a form of greeting between acquaintances. I am used to hugging family and close friends, with handshakes reserved for acquaintances.

LB67 Level 7 July 14, 2018

LOL ... I don't understand the hype over sushi either, why is raw fish considered high cuisine? It's not even cooking, it's just assembling. When forced to visit a sushi joint, I order baked lobster or teriyaki chicken 🙂

@jujuofthesea I am happy to pay extra for the heat source. Lol.

I'm a Catch and Release type also. My friends and family think it's weird. And if I see a beetle on its back, I will flip it over.

@VelociraptorRemy when I was living in a place with winter, I let the spiders live unharassed in my basement until spring, then did the great spider round-up. I also flip over beetles. Let them think I am weird...I am live and let live.

I live in New York.
People tells me I am rude because I speak my mine.
I use stevia instead of artificial sweeteners.
I rather watch the World Cup than football.
I don't drink
I speak two language well and I just registered to learn a third one...

People have accused me of being rude because I speak the truth.

@jlynn37 Usually is the case...They don't want to hear the truth. I feel sorry for them.

2

I don't like lamb or greek food
I'm still friendly for no good reason (I'm working on this tho)
If I want to drive a foreign car I will dammit.
I don't give 2 shits about Michigan vs Ohio (or 99% of organized sports anyway)

Qualia Level 8 July 13, 2018

Don't work too hard on the unfriendly thing, we like you the way you are 🙂

I'm currently in the US,
I dislike football and don't even mention baseball,
I will not pronounce water as warra,
What is an ounce, pint of water?
What is miles? Vs kilometers.
Maybe I'll understand it some day. Maybe

Football -4
Baseball -2

🙂

I'm from Texas and I can't stand football or any sports, really. I'm from the county but I detest country music. I'm a farmboy and I laugh out loud at FFA and 4H.

I see a No-Football theme shaping up ... nice ?

@jujuofthesea I'm a huge football fan. Out of curiosity why the hate against football? I know some people take it to far and especially over some of their priorities but why the dislike?

@MrChange Well, like you I enjoy playing basketball (and volleyball). To me they are fast paced an all players must be skillful with the ball - a joy to watch and to play. Football is the opposite of that, there's constant stop in the action and the players are specialized to do their own thing. I tried watching many times and always came to the same conclusion, it's too boring for me.

@jujuofthesea oh I see. That's me and baseball. I even went to a game and ended reading 7 habits of highly successful people. Lol

@MrChange I'm not sure which is worse? 🙂 🙂 🙂

I am a naturalized US Citizen and the main reason I became American is because I never liked a lot of things in the culture I was born. I do believe the saying "I am not a tree, I can move". So, yes I could tell you stories about everything I despised about my previous life but, nahhh.... ain't gonna
