I know you asked 30 and 40-somethings, but I have a son in that category and he likes to go to exhibits, fairs or shows for the kinds of things he likes (happens to be into Sci-Fi and Martial Arts) or he will take classes at adult education or community venues nearby, rather than conventional colleges, because he says he sometimes meets really interesting people there.
