I would like support from anyone who feels the inclination. I have not worked with the public for some time, but since I actually like the very thing that I fear, I want to be a cashier. I am deathly afraid of it, but everyone I know thinks it is a good idea. I am afraid of this turning into a full blown social phobia, but I do have a few tools in working with a therapist in congnitive development, to learn the job. I am starting with dollar tree because supposedly everything is a dollar and I don't have to worry about price checks and other kinds of interruptions. I applied all over town and gave it my all. I now soon anticipate the scariest part of actually getting hired and having to learn new job skills. Former Dollar Tree cashiers say the learning curve is about 2 weeks. I really do believe this will be good for me in the long run , as I get fulfillment from helping others, but I am scared to death. Yes , slow breathing helps , deep slow breaths to focus . I do have some confidence I can do this, and others swear I can too, licensed professionals. Wish me luck soon 🙂

Hi Howard, Go for it bro. After reading your bio I'm sure you'll succeed. You are a likable intelligent guy who I'm sure will interact well with customers. I'm sure after a while you'll be greeting some returning customers as friends. Try to make your interaction with each customer the highlight of their day. You may have come across a cashier like that already. That my friend is the secret to success in your field. Don't get hung up should you bomb every once in a while just chock it off to experience and try something else. I've been in the retail business for 40 years. Good luck to you and enjoy your growth!

Congratulations on moving forward! I'm sure you will be able to do this. Everyday you go to work or for a job interview will make you stronger and braver. Your therapists will help. We're here to cheer you on, too! You can do it, Howard!!

Just think, you'll be the first to see the new styles of reading glasses arrive. Lucky you!

You can do this, I am an introvert that has taught himself to speak up in public, public speak and deal with the public in my business dealings. It is difficult at first but, I relied on two things to succeed: 1-The belief that I could do it and 2-the knowledge that many of those you are dealing with are just as troubled dealing with others as you are.

Yes, you can do this. It's ok to pretend to be fearless - amazingly, it will become true. Good luck Pat.

Understanding that the customers are idiots just like the rest of us is the first step

If only customers understood that too!
