I was talking to a customer today in the hurricane ravaged state of n.c. I was talking how central north Carolina dodged a major bullet during hurricane Florence. The only comment she made was she believed people were praying. Prayer is why the storm went from a category 4 to 2 before landfall. It's this type of thinking that drives me crazy living in the bible belt. Instead of having a discussion about climate change and hurricane preparedness among many other relevant topics, she just wants to praise Jesus.

So if I have it straight; God creates the natural disasters, but Jesus stops them from hurting too many people if they pray the right way....?

And God targets 'Murica because we took prayer out of the public schools. Can't forget that part.

That was my guess.

The problem with prayer in the public schools is that I'm from that era and all I remember is "those that want to can now have one minute of silent prayer." That's it. Done. Of course, people I went to school with seem to have been encouraged to think it was so much more than this. It was not, and it's their continued church going that has convinced them otherwise.

@DenoPenno Technically, anybody who wants to can pray anytime in public schools or any damn where they please, and nobody can stop them... as long as they don't try to force or lead other people to pray. The point is that there isn't supposed to be organized or school-sponsored prayer, as in at the beginning of the day or in the huddle of the football team.

The myth sponsored by the Xian Right is that students are being kicked out of school for praying to themselves. And it's all the fault of those damned Liberals.

@Paul4747 Exactly so and what you describe is what I am remembering. This is how it went. What the Christian right is remembering is only the myth. They also seem to think that people prayed in school all the time. It just was not so.

@DenoPenno As long as there are pop quizzes, there will be prayer in the public schools.

This is why we have taken no steps to combat it.

I agree, as long as we are not demanding real answers to real questions and demand action nothing of any importance will ever come out of it. North Carolina has had a very long history of even considering that global warming and climate change may have very serious future consequences.

And still the children in war torn and third world countries continue to suffer and die...no matter what amount of prayer is sent up to God. Of course deluded Christians and other religionists refuse to see the abject callous selfishness in their assertions. Sickening!

Let her tell that to the ones who died or the 3,000 in Puerto Rico

Yep her god is tiny God who protects her only

Well put. I’ve also noticed those making such proclamations are usually as loud as possible ..while scanning for an audience. I’m just to your north, in SW VA, so have to ignore a lot of the same crap. Simply put, you’re quality, they’re not ~

It really is scary to me. This hurricane is a taste of what's to come. In my lifetime I'm sure we will experience much more deadly and powerful storms. North Carolina is full of climate change deniers.

Then when something terrible does happen they justify it by saying it was gods plan and not to be questioned. I spend a lot of energy tuning them out. Anyway, glad you folks up there are OK I have friends in the area and hope to see them next week

i can't help wondering why 1. people are so egotistical that they think their god listens to their prayers but not other people's prayers, elsewhere in the world. 2. why they think their god is so stupid he doesn't know to rescue people unless they ask him specifically to do so. 3. why they think their god is to egotistical that he will let people die unless they beg him not to. all this APART from the fact that there is no such thing as a god. that's getting too deep.

And ‘who’ made that fuckin hurricane in the first place 😉

@Varn and millions have not been lucky at all.

If only they could stop praying long enough to actually prepare for the worst more lives would not be needlessly taken.

Thier MIA god won’t be there to magically replace the homes they’ve lost or the bring back the people that have died. Just like here in Houston, there’s hundreds of thousands that believed flood insurance wasn’t necessary. You can only hope people learn.
