The primary operating principle of the US constitution and government was to prevent tyrannical actions by a simple majority. The Bill of Rights were established explicitly to protect the minority from arbitrary rules that might be imposed in a pure democracy.

The confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh by the US Senate by the slimmest of margins over the strong objections of half of the American people has just demonstrated the last vestiges of US government has abandoned that fundamental founding principle. All three branches of the US government are completely illegitimate, they have lost their right to govern. The US government will collapse in a style reminiscent of the fall of the former Soviet Union in the not too distant future. As President Lincoln said, "A house divided cannot stand."

There will be a check and some balance this November.

1

I don't see it falling like the Soviet Union... I see it falling like the Roman Republic on which we are, at least, partially based. Trump is playing the part of Nero! Can we possibly be lucky enough to have that one end the same way?

I'm not an American, but I hope the people who did this know that the rest of the world, especially the liberal-democratic world, sees all of this, and that the moral authority of the US, already seriously challenged, is further weakened as a result.

I do not think the US media is finished with Kavanaugh.

@TheAstroChuck usually don't make corrections but don't you mean "descent" since there is nothing decent about all this at all

@btroje Mr. Kavanaugh and Mr Trump would be happy with either word. They seem to think a right wing dystopian world is pretty decent for them. 🙂

@David1955 yes for them

I have to agree, but I think it's moral authority has collapsed under the weight of the overt racism, sexism and xenophobia from its leadership. That's just before Trump has his first cheeseburger of the day.

Well put. That is one way things could unfold, however, I have a feeling that this government will turn into a theocratic authoritarian state.

@TheAstroChuck I don't understand. What do you mean by a loss of inexpensive natural resources?

@TheAstroChuck So what would happen if we moved away from oil? Also, if economies collapse because of excessive debt, what becomes of all that debt?

@TheAstroChuck Ah, I see. I don't expect it to get better anytime soon.

@Captain747ex check out what happened in Germany after WW1

@btroje Yes, super inflation. The money was so worthless the people were using it as wallpaper.

@Captain747ex I was just watching a documentary of this time. I couldnt understand why they even bothered to print it

@btroje True. It usually makes the situation worse when you just print and print and print more money.

@btroje I have started watching a series on that very subject...how Hitler and his henchmen gained power. It was uncomfortable to watch due to the similarities to our current situation.

@patchoullijulie I'm surprised that most people didn't see the similarities early on in the campaign.

@Captain747ex Right and they are still not seeing the similarities...

@patchoullijulie They probably never will until its too late or at all.

1

You are correct.

All democracies have eventually failed. Greek, Roman, and more recently, Turkish. We (the U.S.A.), will also morph into something else...it is just that some people cannot see it as happening now, but then neither can a frog sitting a tepid pot of water as the temperature rises.

That is a myth, frogs will leap from water that is too hot, regardless of being dropped in or slowly heated. Otherwise, you are spot on.

Very true, and when people did notice, it was way too late.

@TheAstroChuck Another thing that seems to coincide with the demise of a civilization (not necessarily a democracy) is it stops expanding its boarders. Note the former Soviet Union, Roman Empire, and the U.S.A. We have stopped expandings since adding Alaska and Hawaii as states and it is very unlikely that we will add any more (Puerto Rico will not likely become a state, they are to evenly divided (no clear majority) on the issue and we don't really want them.). To sum, we have stopped expanding and the next step will be states (Alaska has such a movement), who will start movements to leave and become independent. Nothing remains in stasus...everything is in flux...even the U.S.A.

lincoln would have said, today, a house ruled by a united bunch of criminals cannot stand either. their unitedness against the citizens divides us.

If 45 and the republicans do not get what they want in November, 45 WILL suspend the Constitution and declare Martial Law.

You are saying the exact same thing that repubs said about Obama during his administration.

@jlynn37 That is the REALLY scary part.

Perhaps.

@TheAstroChuck Yeah, the people who are saying the economy is "good" are being completely disingenuous. It's only good for corporations and the very rich. Shit is fixin' to get really REAL. It's not going to be pretty.

@KKGator When you hear politicians say that "this is good for us". they are not referring to the average citizen but only to corporate 'merca and the 1%.

@jlynn37 Yes, I know this.

republicans also used the worst case scenario so fear rules instead of logic!
fascism always use fear then intimidation to gain power!

“The famous fear spread out by the Fascists that Obama was going to take all your gun away”!

Fear mongering 101 for the republican fascists!

When you see Brett hugging Karl Rove you know that all dirty tricks and fraud is being committed by these Fascists again us!

Unless and until the majority of citizens vote, this country will be, and continue to be, what the minority wants it to be.

The only votes that matter are from the electoral colleges. Citizen votes haven't mattered since before the creation of the CIA.

And then there's the insane imbalance in the Senate where a voter in Wyoming counts as much as 67 voters in California. And then there's the criminal gerrymandering!

3

The Koch brothers want to have a constitutional convention. They already have 30 states aboard.

I would agree that we do need one, but not the way they would handle it. Changes need to be made that will benefit the many instead of the few.

5

Absolutely!

This republican fascist bloodless coup d’tat which took just over fifty years to completely has been arranged to gut our “Bill of Rights”, our Constitution, our safe guards, our environment our laws, and regulations, no matter how flawed does not give this criminal fascist republican minority the right to dismantle, distort, and destroy our country!

Its so mind numbing. I really didnt think my generation would have to fight its way back out of the early 40s. I have a stress headache as we speak just considering how far this infantile oligarch has set the human race back. I really might have to investigate moving to a different country as soon as financially possible. Im humiliated to share a continent with so many opportunistic victim blaming harassers. People like to talk shit about millenials but Im not sure the baby boomer generation in the US can ever be forgiven for this mess.

Exactly!
If I didn't have my critters (some have called it a zoo) I would have already left. The decision would just be where would I go....

I hear New Zealand is nice...

@Heidi68 I hear New Zealand is nice...

I agree I'm seriously considering leaving the United States behind.

@Lucifer_M yes, New Zealand or Australia would be my 1st choices but I was kinda thinking if I went to Europe I could explore quite a few countries before heading to my perfect choice (forever home).

@Heidi68 Europe is well worth it. I've enjoyed my time wandering through it immensely!

Indeed, the concept of "checks and balances" has been completely ignored which is why I place Mitch McConnell in the circle of culpability leading to the current state. A very interesting read comparing the current climate to that prior to WWII - isolationism, a weakening of democracy, etc prevailed was posted in the New York Review of books recently.

Source:

McConnell was on Face The Nation this morning. What an embarrassment!

These Putin and Russian oligarchs you own these criminal fascists republicans!

The republicans are nothing but delusional lapdogs of Putin, his oligarchs, the transnational corporations!

The republicans fascists whole goal is to dismantle and destroy all our protections under “the Bill of Rights”, our Constitution, and our laws to suit their overlords!

It is time to eradicate this disease known as republicans and their fascist overlords!

2

If what you predict should come pass, what then?

I think this country has been through more difficult periods than the present one. But climate change is going to provide added stress every thing and every one in the not-too-distant future. We will be tested.
