Happy Canada pot day!
Today Canada will become the largest country in the world to legalize cannabis. The move will not only drastically reshape marijuana in that country but it means the entire West Coast-from Alaska to California has become a marijuana market-place where the formerly taboo drug is legal and commonplace. Pot shops have sprung up all over my region and a friend has a thriving medicinal cannabis business. [lostartapothecary.com]

Driving back from Toronto the other day was big sign saying No cannabis at the border! Quite a change.

Even though it is legal (here) on both sides there are still prohibitions against the importation.

Legalization of cannabis in Canada is a jackpot (no pun intended) for the government. Now the government controls the sale and use of marijuana and collects a hefty tax on it. There are so many regulations and they differ province to province and municipality to municipality. People are going to be tripped up in these confusing regulations and will end up with fines or worse (the first fine has already been given out for driving while smoking pot). More money for the government and of course lawyers. Use of cannabis in public in my local town is prohibited entirely. In the city, allowed in public spaces outdoors 10 m away from doors and windows. In some places that puts people in the middle of the road. Most of the public is still confused as to what the regulations are.

Of course, Canada is made up of provinces sort of like our states. Each one has it's own rules and regulations.

@JackPedigo And each city and town also decides further what their regulations are. Travel across the border to the US will be a mess as well. The US is already talking about not allowing Canadians who work in the cannabis industry to come across the border.

@graceylou This will be a complicated, messy business. Most things are at the beginning.

Kinda reminds me of "brave new world" a dystopian novel(by huxley, i think). they had a system in which everyone was born into 1 of 5 castes. the lower the caste the less intelligent with the lowest caste relegated to the menial shit jobs of society.
in order to alleviate real unrest in that society they made a drug called soma available to anyone. is this starting to sound familiar?

The problem I see is that pot has been and still is illegal in most places. Also, all classes use it kind of like alcohol.

Yes, because cannabis was invented by big pharma woo woo to assist the government.

Just give yer head a shake.

Really.

It's a fucking plant, variants of which have been around for as long as we have, probly longer. Not everything is woo woo bullshit. It was a mistake it was ever made illegal in the first place ffs. Canada is just making a correction.

There is great nervousness along the entire US/Canada border from Idaho and eastward. Oh bother.

Too bad the weather sucks

Depends where you are. In my area we have had a spell of beautiful, sunny weather and it will last for a while longer.

@JackPedigo I was just in Maine and the weather was delightful but it won't stay that way.

@confidentrealm We are further than the northern border of Main yet the climate here is temperate. Right now it's in the 60's sunny and been so for over a week and is expected to remain so for almost another week. The way it works here when the pressure drops we get some rain and warmer temps.

Another reason to move to Canada

You do know their individual taxes are higher then here. The money is used for infrastructure and things like universal healthcare.

@JackPedigo Yes I am aware that their taxes are higher and used for better things than lining a politicians pocket

@helionoftroy We have one of the lowest individual tax rates around. Then politicians get votes by lowering them even further. Then we holler because our infrastructure is D+ and we have a lousy national health care system.

Trying weed is on my bucket list. The state I live in, it's not legal yet. Maybe, some day it will be. Keep your fingers crossed.

Medical is legal isn't it?

@MacTavish I'm not sure if it's legal in Illinois for medical reasons. What medical reason could I use if it was.

@MacTavish Thanks for the info. I will check the rest of the things on that list. What you posted I don't have.

@freedom41 Don’t bother with the medical route if you just want to try it. Go to a state where it is legal or just get the black market stuff if you are more bold.

Yay Canada! For this and many other things, but mostly for giving us hope and a model for a better way of thinking, acting and living. 😀

Meanwhile in Missouri... marijuana isn't even legal for medicinal use. Welcome to the dark ages.

Pretty much the same in Georgia. CBD oil is legal for children with very limited disorders, but damned near impossible to get. It's stupid.

@KKGator CBD is everywhere in SC. We have hemp growers for CBD but THC is still illegal.

@helionoftroy In Georgia, the people who need it, and can obtain it legally, still can't get it. This state will likely be one of the last to legalize. In that particular respect, it really sucks here.

Moving to Canada becomes more appealing every day.
It's a damned shame I can't take the cold weather.

It's not cold everywhere.

@Umbral It is in the winter.

I have never ingested marijuana in my life, nor did the people in my circle of friends! But, I did observe from a distance, people who did use it and none of them have faired well over time, if they are still living! It seems to me that our current ‘social order,’ has set up a trap for people (for GREAT profits) and when the people fall in and are damaged they are dragged back out and taken to be repaired! Great plan, if you need human robots!

I have never tried "pot", or any drug for that matter, and have never had any desire to do so. Drugs are for those who can not handle reality.

@jlynn37 I have to agree! From what I have studied and witnessed!

@jlynn37 Reality is for those who can't handle drugs. lol

@Maindawg No one is criticizing or condemning you, or anyone, for the choices that you make. I am just saying it is not for me. You do you, I do me and let's strive to do or cause no harm.

@Maindawg I have reported what I have personally observed and still see today! I have studied the research...you want get a totally free ride! Not even prescription drugs can do that...there is a down side! I am an observer from the outside, I can usually trust my eyes and ears, and when I have doubts I wait for more information to show up! Recently, another friend, told me of her life long friend that was a Rhodes Scholar and over the years, with smoking marijuana her intellect did not hold up! I have many many more different examples! You are free to choose your life experiences, the same as anyone else! My point was based on my observations and I have been more keen on observing people than the average person. Just so you know.

@Freedompath And I smoked weed all through high school yet scored a 149 on the IQ scale in my senior year and I also scored more than above average on my ASVAB. I know the results from smoking weed differs between individuals and I find generalizations hard to apply; common denominators are common though.
I'm just saying to be careful, some studies can be skewed, biased or misinterpreted by the authors.
The Rhodes scholar you mentioned, did they suffer from any disease which may have attributed to the reduced mental faculties?

@MacTavish Every drug (cannibus is a drug), has a down side, that we surely can agree on. I used my friends story because it was a few days ago and she too had more stories and is also a nurse and comes from Michigan. I am from Ga! I had 5 children who had a wide range of friends, that I observed over the years, along with my own children. I had a vested interest in studing the effects of anything to do with the brain...since our main operating system is our brain. And, from my observation emotions and behavior are altered, with cannibus use...ofcourse, the one who is altered does not see that he is altered, but the people observing that person can observe it. It is not their natural state. These are my opinions based on what I have observed.
I choose to operate from MY, natural state, how could I ever correct something when part of it comes from my unnatural alter state? We are not talking about physical disease, but a deliberately altered brain function, with a drug!

@CoastRiderBill Take it for what it is worth my friend.

@CoastRiderBill it is a fact, that living in this world in it’s unaltered state can be very difficult and even more so if your brain is wired for addiction! Life IS hard!

@Freedompath You live in your unaltered state and I'll live in my altered state. Works for you, works for me.

@jlynn37 handle reality? why would you want to do that?

@MacTavish I do not recall asking for anything...I was sharing what I have learned about one part of life...over my lifetime! Take or leave it and I will do the same!

@Freedompath Well then, I'l just take it back.

@Freedompath Always someone trying to piss on the parade.

@MacTavish ...maybe there are also people who want to keep their heads on straight!

I am wondering if the popularity of this drug is due to the worsening world scene. It becomes another form of escapism.

I respect your observations, but I have to say that my own experiences are nothing like what you describe after pretty much a lifetime consuming or being around those that consume.

I'd also like to add that I can agree with you that every drug will have a downside. That said, in my opinion it's not the drug, the use of the drug, or the access to it that causes issues.

@Umbral ...perception of reality is everything. That perception changes when the brain is altered. A misperception, with a brain altering drug, in a potential dangerous situation, can cost an innocent person. Therefore other people are at risk, who do not use brain altering substances! The prisons are full of people who did things that harmed others, when they were in an altered state! It is hard enough to watch someone that means a lot to you, behave out of his natural state, and not be able to get through to that person! Robotic is not our ‘natural state!’

@Freedompath I am not robotic in any way, shape, or form when I consume. Nor are the professionals I associate with when they consume.

The prisons are full of people that have been unjustly incarcerated for possession of something that shouldn't be illeagal. Anywhere. Of those incarcerated, an extraordinarily inordinate amount are minorities. The so called "War on Drugs" has essentially been a race war perpetrated with the support of unwitting white voters that have been fed misinformation since the 1930's and 40's.

also bet my life that drugs had nothing to do with most of the innocent people killed by another person's misdeed or mistake.

@Umbral She is acting as a troll, trying to force her ideology onto others. Perhaps she ought to have been a cop, you know, the fun police.

@MacTavish no, I don't believe so. Her opinion isn't mine, but it's one shared by a great many. Too many, but it is what it is. Entrenched beliefs aren't easy to change, as most here would already know. The propaganda against drugs has been pervasive for a very very long time.

@Umbral I do not believe cannibus should be illegal and I was not referring to being in prison for any amount of marijuana! I am against that as well! I am talking about altered realities...a brain thing! If you really are interested in something besides injesting a mind altering substance, do some research on the brain! That is what I did!

@Umbral, @MacTavish ...is that the same way that you are trying to force your idealogy on me? Even resorting to calling me a troll! I believe that my nearly year long postings are all here for anyone to read! It appears you protest to much...

@Freedompath May I ask how you know I'm not very well versed in the brain, how it works and the effects of various drugs on it?

I would respectfully ask that you don't make assumptions just because I don't share your conclusions. I'm not casting aspersions on what you feel you understand about the brain either.

@Umbral ...I don’t ‘feel,’ about the brain!

OMG, what madness! Allowing grown people to make decisions for themselves - where will it all end?

A bright day for Canada.

4

Would yall mind invading us and maybe burn down the white house again, for old times sake?

That was a Trump talking point. The Brits burned it. He was trying to take stabs(false) at us at the time. The idiot doesn’t know history, because he’s never read a book.

Yeah, I'm in favor of "burning one down"!

@Green_eyes well trust me I havent gotten any history lessons from Trump lol maybe Drunk History at the worst. But Im positive Ive heard a canadian citizen claim credit for it before when antagonized by an American; perhaps he was bluffing lol. Was it not the same buncha brits via canada that stayed and eventually started, or at least became a part of canada? If not then I apologize but theyre the closest thing to Brits as weve got on this continent, so we're gonna need em to help us get rowdy asap please.

@Green_eyes nevermind I musta conflated some memories. Upon refreshing myself I see that it was in retaliation for our destruction of a Canadian port, so thats where I got the idea that the Canadians attacked lol. Im sure its possible that some of the troops came from or wound up in Canada but who knows. Either way, yeah canadians, don't let the British have all the fun! Nows your chance to top their senior prank! ?

Outstanding. There will still be regulations at province and district level, but at least it will be legal at the federal level.
