Yep, happened to me with two previous companies, though I personally was not laid off. Yet managements expect you to give two weeks or more notice if you resign. Right.

I’m not sure how they went about it is legal. It’s my understanding that a lay-off of that size requires 60 days notice. Otherwise, what happened is cruel and ethically bankrupt.

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear this. I have been laid off 2 times so far in my career. Both times the morale of the entire company was affected very negatively. For weeks, people were huddled, talking about who was next and fuming over who was already let go. Both companies are still prospering so it's likely this will be the way things continue to operate. The good news is, it's a recoverable situation for employees and it's easy to explain to potential employers that you were laid off.

You might want to check out any benefits you can get through your city/state due to a layoff. Some offer funds for education and you'll certainly be entitled to unemployment. If you're not let go, you may want to consider looking for something else because in my experience the fallout from layoffs lasts quite awhile and it's no better for the people left to pick up the pieces. I had to train my replacements when I worked at a fortune 500 company.. They offered me another job at 1/2 my pay rate. I turned that down. 6 months later that department came in to boxes & pink slips...on Valentines day. That made front page news. They eventually went bankrupt.

Yes, I went through it and they called it "right-sizing" to make it more palatable for themselves. Sorry you had to endure that. Maybe they missed the memo from the asshole-in-chief on job creation.

When a company overextends its typically leadership that creates that scenario. If your leadership is doing things like that then they're not very good at their jobs and that will unfortunately often be apparent in their handling of any situation, layoffs included.

Yes, twice! But we didn't get the meeting either time. The first time, I made it through two previous rounds of layoffs then got called in on the third round. They offered me an extra 30 days if I'd go to Mexico City to train my replacement. I jumped at the chance! I hadn't ever been there before. Second time, I was one of the lucky ones. I got a 90 day notice instead of being walked out of the building. Plus freedom to work with a placement service and attend classes or interviews as often as needed. I was surprised both times but felt I was treated fairly. Still hard to deal with though.

Yes.... It's a though pill to swallow. It's not the worst deal since there are jobs out there right now. The best thing you can do is to turn the page, move on emotionally as quickly as possible and start looking for your next job very agressively. Every interview from that point going forward is a step in the right direction. Focus and keep pressing relentlessly

I know it's hard right now, but you will find a way to survive. Even if you get laid off, you still have your skills and will find another job, probably an wven better job as you have gained more skills since you began working in your current job. Or you may be able to get additional training to find a completely different job. Layoffs definitely force us out of our comfort zone but that can be a good thing. Good luck and keep smiling!?

I've had the speech given by new owners that everyone's job is safe and in a few months the lay offs came.
