Today my job had a company wide meeting telling us that 200 people were getting laid off immediately. They said go to your desk and wait for a call from your supervisor. I can not even explain how tense that next hour was, seeing your coworkers getting walked out and waiting for your phone to ring. I am so angry at how they went about it. The lay offs are not over, either. More by the end of the year.

Have you experienced anything like this?

Thats terrible, so insensitive of them. Sorry you had to go through it!

2

Not sure if they could have been more insensitive or even inhumane. So sorry for what you're going through.

I've also been on the other end of this; as manager having to lay off great people. It's tough on either end, I always encouraged them to just look at it as a good, wipe your feet on the way out, type of thing. Any employer who would do that to you doesn't deserve your talents on their team.

Most companies now days lay people off after a few years because they can hire new people and pay them less than they were paying you.I'm sorry but this will probably happen again and again through out your career.

I have had contracts and "permanent" jobs. All the "permanent" jobs in the last 20 years ended in layoffs except for one. Layoffs always suck and you never get used to it. In some ways having a contract is good since you know when it will end and can plan for it.

ever since the elites destroyed the unions the avg worker is at the mercy of the sociopaths.
the crazy thing is that the avg worker participated in her own demise by cheering when reagan fired the air traffic controllers way back in the early 1980s.
they bot into the ridiculous trickle down wealth affect. unfortunately it worked the other way around.

Twice, I worked for companies that were sold, and my manager job was eliminated.

Understanding, the new owner wanted to manage the company.

2

Get used to it. Next year, you will probably have to suffer through an employee engagement program.

2

That really sucks. Sorry. Well, look on the bright side. It could be worst, you could be retired.

2

Start looking for another position as soon as you can just to cover your own ass. Of course don't do it on the companies dime.

i think there is some double entendre going on here...

Not cool! I work for a company that was very small when I started and began to grow. It eventually was sold into a much larger company. I definitely preferred the smaller company, as it was much more personable. I only feel secure in my particular job these days because two of my clients are still living. Once they are both gone, my hours will be cut for certain. The only reason I think I’ll keep the job is because my English degree has taught me good language skills which I use when communicating with clients &/or bosses.

Worked in the oilfield for 15 years.. went thru 6 rounds of layoffs over that period.. it got to the point I wanted them to lay me off.. it's stupid and painful..

I’ve actually experience this kind of shitty ass lay-off several times.

I understand a company being concerned about notifying people early, for fear of what a disgruntled employee might do, but still.

The good way to go about it would be to give a generous severance. Once I got a month’s pay. Mostly I got nothing.

They expect a two weeks notification from you, or you’re “unprofessional”. I think the same goes for them.

If it's a large company laying people off because they don't need them, a generous layoff is possible. Missy lay off people because they're losing money, and can't afford a generous package. Should always get away Least two weeks though.

This is why people horde vacation days, so at least you get paid out on that... unless you get "unlimited" PTO.

2

That's horrible. Sorry it happened to you. I worked in a hospital once and when the patient count dropped, they asked me to quit. Only later did I find out that the request was so they wouldn't be impacted with regard to the employment office for laying people off.

2

That is horrible! If they need to lay people off, ok, but that is a terrible way to go about it.

Agreed.

2

I've been through quite a few lay off unfortunately. But none of them were done in such a stressful manner as what you described. That was a terrible way to handle it and whoever came up with it should be the one let go.

2

Kind of a dick move for sure.

Succinct and accurate.

@CommonHuman simple n sweet

Yup!

2

Yes. Had someone come in and tell the whole office that our office was closing and unless we were able to move to another state we'd be layed off. No inclination this was going to happen and he seemed to take such glee in telling us.

2

They laid off people and I would dare to imagine there are others such as yourself that disagree with how they did it. You can't stop the lay off, you can't change how they did it but you can protect yourself and other by saying bye to the company, find a new job, point out to your co-workers that maybe they should find new jobs because the current company see no value in it's employees.

2

I've never been in that type of job category. Even so, I don't think they are doing this properly.

2

Ya, you don't want to work for a company that treats people like that. If possible, put that job behind you.

2

Omg ! I cannot believe how callous your company have been in laying off staff.
If that happened in the UK , that would make national news.
Hope you find a better employer in the future.

@OwlInASack they get a capitalist population all scared of each other 'they're taking your jobs', 'everyone will game the system and you'll be working full pay half the populations bills'. Never mind that the dire predictions don't actually come to pass in more socialistic countries.

2

Yes, in my job too . They laid off few people last week without any warning or anything . One of the employees, she's been working there for ten years, and she's was in the middle of something and they call her to the adminstration office and told her that she was laid off.. she got shocked.

2

Why did they bother with the company-wide meeting?

Lay-offs and re-organizations are never fun. Corporations have the gold and make the rules. If Humanity doesn't figure out how to stop their domination, it may well degenerate, splinter or simply not survive.

Or, you could embrace your degradation. A lot of religionists look on corporate life as their own martyrdom, at least in part.

I would still claim that these practices are a testament to our cultural insanity. Unethical protocols defined by attorneys. Honestly, a significant portion of the population are (like DT) narcissist egomaniacs who enjoy and even thrive on sowing havoc. People like to exercise power, and watching people do their bidding is a thrill. They love the schadenfreude that comes when they define an unrealistic challenge. Pathological bosses are not hard to find, in a culture where nearly everyone has some pathology.

1

Companies I have worked for have handled layoffs as quietly as possible. It is just stupid and incompetent to scare the people you want to keep. It's an excellent job market for employees, and some of those star performers may decide to leave after such an experience.

Some 'decent States have laws that disallow bosses to fire over the phone.

The phone call was to request an in person meeting.
