A thought crossed my mind and I'd like the input/opinions of others on it.
Are the Theists/Religious, etc, envious/jealous of we, Atheists/Agnostics, simply because we are not bound down/regulated/controlled, etc, by the same dictatorial laws, etc, of their beliefs as they are.
We are free to think as we wish, free to associate with anyone we so choose with no fear of retribution from some Supreme Higher Power, is that the one of the reasons for their animosity?

I haven't experienced any animosity, unless you consider a shocked look as animosity. I've spent most of my life on the West Coast. It has only come up when I've been working at a client site in the South.

No, I don't think so. I don't think people of faith have the ability to think outside the box enough to be jealous. I think they are mad at us because they think we are being disrespectful to their god. Ironically, a lot of Christians and Muslims don't follow the teachings of their masters. If they did, the world would be a much more peaceful place (you know, except for the stoning and throwing homosexuals off of high places).I think people who believe in a god take the stance that atheists are godless heathen animals. I think they take a stance of superiority to us, as if they are the chosen people. I think they actually enjoy the thought that, according to their belief system, we will all burn in hell, while they enjoy eternity with their god in a fictional place called heaven.

@Antifred I was shooting more for turn the other cheek be good to each other what you do to the least of these you do to me. Thanks for raining on My Parade

No. They don't like to have their belief systems challenged. The same applies to other belief systems including political beliefs. The interesting thing for those of us with a genuine interest in human behaviour is that the rationality involved in rejecting the idea of a deity does not necessarily translate to other belief systems vis a vis some on here believe Trump to be an asset. ?

No one wants their beliefs challenged. Ever. That's not a particular fault of believers.

@authentica there are generalisations and then there are untruths. Your comment is an untruth. Many people like to have their beliefs challenged and indeed regulary challenge their own beliefs. Many also try to understand why others believe as they do even when those beliefs are contrary to their own. ?

Believers are kept in their faith by fear and guilt, and most have alot invested in their faith.....first they are taught that any thing or any one professing to not believe, is being led by the devil, or is in cahoots with the devil, and must be evil....even a sin to listen.....and don't read anything against believeing. ......so most live in fear of being led astray. And what you fear, is hated....my experience is, if confronted by someone that doesn't run, lash out, or call the cops when told that I'm atheist. Is not a beliver. If jealous or envious......non-believer for sure.

Any theist that I've engaged on the topic is rather in fear of our soul, and in fear that we can't possibly determine how to live morally without supernatural guidance.

If they were jealous of our freedoms, they could convert also. So it's probably a selection issue.

And if they feel strongly about both having the freedom but aren't willing to suspend their belief, they will simply be lapsed or bad at their religion.

How one can reconcile that in the same mind I have no idea. It seems to me like if you had any belief at all in an omniscient omnipotent sky fairy, that the only reasonable course of action would to be to prostrate oneself before their power and comply as much as humanely possible with their dictates. If I thought at all that it was true, I could only be a monk.

Could it not be, perhaps, that they disguise their envy, etc, with this ' fear for our souls?

I think it's pity that we don't know the love of god. Plus, no one wants to be told they're wrong when they think they're right.

Perhaps they fear the fearless, or simply want company in belief and feel abandoned by freethinkers. It is curious.

“The theists/religious etc.” encompasses a very broad spectrum. I imagine the typical member of that group is disinterested in the opinions of atheists—those who are religious on a deep level are not thinking about belief or disbelief at all.

Suppose there were a few people who felt envious of atheists. That would mean that their religion was skin-deep. They could easily declare themselves to be atheists if they felt that way.
