Does anyone else get a little creeped out when you see you have a new "Follower", but upon checking out their profile you observe that he (or she) is the absolute antithesis of anything you'd ever want in a mate or friend? For example, my followers tend be Alt Righters and Believers. My profile is fairly comprehensive, so what is their deal? Are they just super dense or is it something else? Also, is blocking the only way to shake them?

(edit: I am talking about followers that never message me. They just follow.)

I'm not sure which category to post this under, so I put it here.

I wouldn't worry about it. Chances are they liked the picture of a pet or something you posted on your profile or they think you're hot. I'm convinced that 9 out of 10 people who message me never read my profile.

I agree with you.

They're coming to get you, Margaret.

I don't even know who is following me. I don't look at who has viewed my profile.
If someone messages me, I'll respond, and proceed accordingly.

There have only been two or three, in the last (almost) year, who I haven't wanted
to converse with. One, because he completely ignored the fact that I'm only here for community, and obviously hasn't bothered reading any of my posts in which I've made it abundantly clear that I am NOT interested in "dating" or pursuing another relationship. He was bound and determined to get me to "come around" because he was into older women.

I honestly don't care who is following me. People are going to do whatever they're
going to do. I'm not following anyone.
If anyone bugs me, I'll just block them.

They're just jealous.

they are simple folks looking for pointless confrontation. It helps them to believe they're keeping their brain active.

I suspect some people liked something you posted and followed you irrespective of differences in world view. Others probably just like your profile pic and it's not much deeper than that. And a few might be aware of the differences and that's why they decided to follow, because they seek out debate or are just curious about different perspectives. I don't think I'd block anyone unless they're harassing me, though.

I follow people that post interesting things in various groups, which leads me to more interesting posts & people to follow, which leads me to ...

I'm just illustrating that it might not be "you" some people are following, but more your posts and where that might lead them. Heck, I follow some people I probably wouldn't like and that probably wouldn't like me, but they post stuff.

From FAQ (frequently asked questions):

What should I do if I see someone being disrespectful to a member or individual instead of ideas?

Please go to the member's profile page and click the "flag" icon. We will take appropriate steps. If a member is being annoying, you can also just block them by clicking the “ Block” link on their profile page. If you do that, you won’t see any of their posts and they won’t see yours.

To unblock someone, click on the "gear" icon at the top of the page and then click the "Blocked" tab. You should be able to get to their profile page from there and can click "Unblock" link.

Sometimes people used to follow me on YouTube just so they could troll ever post comment I ever made. Some people have no fucking life.

I Don't have that problem.

This is really going on a long stretch but I am going to speculate that because most main stream religions are highly misogynistic and many theists arrogantly consider themselves highly superior (chosen by their god) to the atheist, because the hold two positions of superiority (male over female and theist over atheist) they may believe non theist girls are easy targets. The last part of this assessment is based on decades of listening to theistic guys declaring such superiority in the YMCA locker room.

The YMCA is my most fertile theistic hunting grounds and I have De-converted a few theists there.

@Maiasaura I've often encountered that argument from Christians. Usually asserted by women. Most are very sorry they open that can of worms as I #1 confirm that morality is defined as that which does not please their god, then I use their bible (ok to own and sell slaves, you can beat them as long as they don't die within two days, when you daughter bleeds (if you are the father) you can sell her as a sex slave, OK to kill and burn your daughter, etc. but is you wear mixed fabrics, you have sinned. LOL.

I've experienced that on occasion. I'm very up front on my being Agnostic and liberal, yet once in a while I'll get a response from some religious woman.

Nope! If someone wants to follow me, cool. If they don't communicate, I assume they just like what I post or are possibly shy and want to get to know me through comments and posts. I have several times made first contact, but mostly nothing comes from it. So I don't do that as much. There are a lot of shy or introverted men on this site and I seem to always run into them. That's not bad, it's actually great if all you want is a friend (I've made several) but I want more than just friendship. Also, I tend to struggle communicating with the shy and introverted types. It could just be me. ?

It doesn’t concern me as as I’ve seen the names on the forums here and there. It’s a community and there’s really interesting people with some great things to say. You can choose to block.. I rarely have unless someone was being really abusive.

1

As a guy I know I don’t have the same security concerns you have. I don’t know who is following me and hat doesn’t particularly worry me. But I agree that following someone who has a completely opposite world view is strange. I might “like” your pictures because they are good and you look good. But if I “follow” we should have some conversation.

@Maiasaura I’ve run into scammer and spammers and I tend to be a little suspicious. I wonder if these people realize they’re in the wrong site and leave (in spite of the pretty obvious name of the site), or what.

1

I got blocked by a guy today simply because I told him I'm not interested in him. Apparently, he's desperately looking. I'm always grateful when people like that remove themselves. Instead of accepting the rejection like a real man and allowed us to be friends on here that agree with a lot of the same things. I liked some of his posts, but attitude is everything for me. Oh, well.

1

Its been practically a year, and I have never had a follower on this site. People just view my profile and leave nothing, lol.

@Maiasaura Yep. Its still an interesting site, but I haven't gotten any interaction from anyone. Don't know what to make of it when it comes to actually meeting people on here.

1

Not at all. It doesn't affect me at all. If people are rude to me I block them, or if their posts are just beyond the pale offensive.

I make use of the block button especially if people are creepy. It’s usually but not always male, Christian, alt-right or far right. All Blocked and forgotten.

Id
Love that. Yes follow me

Look what you started. Happy now?

You had me at "creeped out."

So, I read a some of your posts, and I find them so attractive that I have decided to "follow you."

I understand that this may cause you alarm given that we are calculated as being a 90% match.

But, also given, the distance between us is too expensive to breach for mere stalking. You do not need to be concerned you will see my face close enough to recognize.

But, I will be watching you.

😉

@Maiasaura A new category appeared on the home page: "Favorite Members" And only your photo is displayed. . . . Clearly we are both special.

YO! Maiasaura!
I see that you have no followers here? So, are you just asking in general, or have you sent all who have deigned to click the 'follow' button to the dungeon of disappointment?

I assumed those be "blocking " words.

@Maiasaura . . So you not sharing the wealth? hmmmmm.

@Maiasaura . . . I did not expect that response. I am too stunned to write more.

0

Are you sure it's them and not you?

In general: don't block anyone. Blocking just results in not learning new stuff.

(I have tried to post this 3 times. Have I been blocked?)

@Maiasaura . . . .I only have three followers, and I am afraid to learn who they are. The mystery would be lost.

Only three? No doubt beause I am a man with a bad haircut, weird glasses, and a strange sweater.

I have more followers at FB, and Quara. They want to be notified whenever I have contributed some pithy attempt at profundity. I do attempt to reward their interest and patience.

::::: I think you were expecting a follow-up as if this were primarily a dating site like OKCupid.
Hence it was you and not them. As I see you have written below.

"Right to block" No dispute. Just saying that, in a forum setting, it is usually counter-productive to learning stuff not known.

Harassment should be reported.

It doesn’t bother me unless they cause issues for me. I have quite a few followers I don’t even know and have never talked to.

Shouldn't it be everyone's goal to expand their horizons and not to associate with people just like them?
