Any suggestions on how to get over the anger and feeling of betrayal from your mother and brothers that have completely thrown out their values, integrity, and character to support a piece of garbage with the label of republican? I’m usually just sad and confused by it but there are times that the anger gets upsetting.
Hopefully he will have his wings cut Tuesday... Someone should clip his nuts....
A lot of my friends are Trump supporters. We disagree cordially on topics. (Even though, they sometimes get out-of-hand.) I'm not going to let one idiot destroy my relationship with the people I love. I have to keep telling myself, "You're the designated driver. They're all drunk." Hehehe...
It may be small consolation but a there are quite a few other people who also support that piece of garbage. Not a majority of voters, but a significant number. Actually they view him more as a Molotov cocktail, an incendiary device thrown into the body politic with intent to destroy. To your family members and all who swing that way I would say "Be careful what you wish for." A vote in favor of demagoguery, dishonesty, xenophobia, racism, ignorance, fear, and chauvinism (all attributes of the fire bomb) is a vote for serfdom.
Brilliant summation..
I can not understand why and how anyone can support the pile of crap we have.
Only worry about what you can control. And the only thing you can control here is your attitude! I have lost friends over this administration... They want to preach EVERY time I see them. I also have a sister who supports Trump (A traumatic brain injury 20 years ago... Go figure!) But we decide not to talk about it and we move along.
So to me it's like this... I don't listen to anyone preach. I don't care if they are christian, republican or druid... I don't put up with it. NOBODY likes to be preached to.
Find middle ground! You know... Like Kanye West is an asshole. Everyone agrees on that!
Ive had frank conversations with my mother and stepdad and if I didnt need their help in life and they mine Id probably just cut them off. But circumstantially its necessary for me to work with my family and coworkers despite their odious and selfish gullibility. Most of these people are only terrible in the sense of what they politically advocate. They will treat most everyone well individually and it seems some cognitive dissonance and tribalistic fear is the source of their tastelessness in policy. It sickens me too and if they wanna start with me Ill speak up for whomever theyre dehumanizing but most of the time we just have to pick our battles, stay off politics and get the work done.
A friend of mine has relatives who are flat earthers. No good solutions other than avoiding them.
no way! do people really think that? that's hilarious. I want to meet these people lol
I’ve had to let go of a lot of friends. It tells me a lot about thier heart and character if they support a man who thinks it’s ok to sexually assault women and cage children. I just can’t do it.
I have the same thing going on with my people.....
we can't pick our relatives, that's for sure. But you can hold your head up high knowing you have the moral high ground. Be glad you're enlightened and be an example of what is right and good by living by your principles. Never ever lose your temper in arguments!
I have a brother who is a rabid republican. I do not get angry with him. Rather, I pity him. He has had bad influences in his life, such as Fox News (a.k.a. Faux News). I have not rejected him, but he has rejected me because I dared to show him evidence that his claims are false. I still love him as my brother. I miss him. I pity him. But I am not angry at him, and I do not hate him. I hope that some day he will learn to think reasonably.
To me, family has nothing to do with blood or DNA.
I don't have any problem writing people off if I find their beliefs abhorrent.
Whether it's politics or religion, I'm not tolerating the bullshit anymore.
If anyone is supporting 45, or the republicans, I'm done with them.
We are fundamentally different. I'm not going to be tolerant of that.
However you don't have to tolerate Trumpism to understand it, or pity the fool who embraces it, or educate him/her. For this last part you can start by working around the edges, establishing a set of facts that everyone can agree on. Then move on from there. We will need to bring as many of these folks over to our side as we can if we are going to move forward.
@Flyingsaucesir I just spent the last few months trying to do just that within the local republican party, to no avail.
It's the same with believers. You can present them with all the facts and evidence. You can be as gentle with your persuasion as possible. It's not making a dent in most of them.
They are stubborn in their insistence that they are right, and that everyone else is 100% wrong, about everything.
I'm tired of beating my head against a wall. With both of them.
All I end up with is a headache, and they're still ignorant AF.
@KKGator
This is not going to be easy or quick. Climate change may have to become more severe before people acknowledge that is real. When they finally do, we need to remind them who was right all along and who was lying to all of us.
@Flyingsaucesir It won't matter who was "right" and who lied. We're all going to be suffering. They still won't listen anyway. They'll all be claiming it's "god's will", and praying over it, while they die.
@KKGator
I think it's possible to persuade a few. Good on you for trying!
Dealing with the kind of illogic, racism, misogyny xenophobia etc., of tRump and his political enablers is sometimes unbearable. Are there any other family members who aren't this deluded? I don't envy you trying to balance when to challenge, when to bite your tongue and when to run away screaming. This isn't a bad place to get support. With you in this.
Well...... ya can't. But you can compartmentalize it. Find fond memories from your childhood if you need to keep the bonds. but other than that if you have no special bonds...fuck em' you don't have time in your life for idiots.
Get a bit of distance when you feel angry coming on. I stopped following a cousin because of this. I only spoke to him when the Hurricane was going to hit Florida. Wanted to check on his safety. Other than that no social communication. Hard with your mom. Just talk about other things.
Don't talk politics with family.
how else are you to educate them?
@benhmiller It's not my job to educate my peers or my elders - let them work sh-t out. I'm only responsible for my kids and to that end, I did well enough.
I don’t and never really have discussed politics with them. It is a forbidden topic.
....sometimes any subject is colored
with this background;I have trouble
with the condescension-"that I'm not smart
enough to understand the accomplishments
of the right"-reality gets put on hold by
THEM-not me*
What a perfect 'case in point' you present. It's irresistible.
Anger is the direct product of thwarted expectations. Expectations are most often unrealized because they are also, most often, not realistic. Don't blame me as message bearer. That is just how it works.
Want effective 'anger management'? It is easier than generally expected; so there is a realized expectation. Anger management is misnamed. What one needs is expectation management and that is achieved by well functioning, balanced cognitive faculties. If we have intact reasoning ability and are in touch with the environment as it actually exists, rather than we either fantasize it to be or are told it is second-hand, we can keep expectations within reality's bounds.
Consider the possibility, if you will, that they don't enjoy a monopoly on misguidance. Being flawed creatures and products of a society resting upon a lot of artifice, we are all susceptible to infection with notions about things that in reality - just hain't so. Nobody stays clean in dirty, shared bath water. One must step-out and away; rinse-off and avoid getting back into original or new tubs. They're all polluted but we're deprived of that perception until we're clean; nostrils included.
Don't want to be angry? Step-out and you'll experience the stench of delusion and hypocrisy in both tubs. Groups are all headed and manipulated by 'leadership'. Leaders share the same functional elements and motives. Here's a funny thing I just remembered to illustrate it:
@irascible Yes, I agree. Task management within available time is kind of like packing a bag for a trip. Prioritize items and arrange accordingly within a space available group..
‘We’ only had a little sister who strayed … married into old money, thus began voting Republican.. But she’s out, and back! So my immediate family is solid Blue ~
Got some uncles & cousins thinking they’ll end up at the ‘feet of god’ some day.. Likely the reason they’ve not seen me for several funerals now.
Stay here with us (Doherty..), we love you!
Just cut them off. I've cut off my relatives at 16. Although many people don't have the guts to do it.
