In this case, it is about correcting an injustice that happened 2 years ago.

Federal (natinal) elected offices are The President, Senators, and the House of Representatives.

The president is elected once every four years.

Senators have to be elected every six years. We do not elect all senators at once, but stager the terms so abotu a third of them run every two years. Each state is represented by two senators.

The House of Representatives hve to be elected every two years. Every House member runs for office every two years years Representation is determined by population. Each ten years we have a census to determine curent population levels in each state, and the number of representatives from ech state depends on teh population of the previous census. Also district lines are drawn for ech representative for the local are they represent in their state. Lines are (supposedly) drawn so ech representative represents an relatively equal number of people.

So, we have elections for Federal offices every two years. We usually label them as a Presidential election or a mid term election. The mid term happens in the middle of the president's four year term of office. Thus the name "Mid Term".

All Americans are suposed o know all of this, but I am surprised at how few actually do.

It's called a mid term election because it's in the middle of the presidents term of office.

The purpose is to determine who controls congress, the Democrat crony capitalists or the Republican crony capitalists.

You're hardly a dunce for not knowing about midterms. Ask us to name your prime minister.

yes, the true dunce would not ask questions.

This may be our last chance to put the brakes on an out-of-control wannabe dictator, so sitting this election out is no longer an option. The sad reality is that two of the groups most harmed by Republican policies, young people and minorities, don't show up at the polls. Maybe this time???

Minorities have been intentionally gerrymandered out of the process in many cases. All the voter fraud measures, polling place closures and redrawing of districts that the GOP passes is designed to keep people of color away from the polls. In one case they admitted it in writing recently. Theyve done it to Native Americans and poor black communities all over the place this election and sometimes tamper with the machines themselves so that straight dem tickets switched some votes to ted cruz illegally in TX.

Young white folks have no excuses though and they are indeed finally turning out in record numbers this time. The 18-29 vote in TN was up 700% or more last i looked. Which is good because its our only hope.

I don't care for political stuff so I am of no help. But maybe I can learn something too if I pay attention to your post. Lol

Being numb to politics is all too common. And the point is well taken. So please take note from those of us that pay close attention. It is TRUE that the midterms actually decide what type of government we will have in the future. I have always voted and lived with the outcome but always the constitution remained as the foundation to both parties, NO LONGER is this the reality.
If you live in the USA and enjoy your ability to post , as you did, you must consider what is truly happening. AND IT IS. This is a vote to continue using our constitution as our core verses changing it by allowing the president the power to do it his/her way.

there are governorships up for grabs/defending as well, and state and local posts ranging from judges to dogcatchers to state senators to whatever. it's not just federal. we have 50 states with a whole lot of government going on (or round and round) in them too.

To be honest, it's more or less a referendum on Donald Trump. It's America's chance to answer the question of whether 2016 was an accident, a fluke or we really meant to fill in that bubble next to a reality TV star.

3

Every two years all Representatives and 1/3 of the Senate are up for reelection. It is often seen as a referendum on the job the president is doing.
