WHAT'S YOUR TAKEAWAY FROM THE MIDTERMS?

Mine is that it was supposed to be a firm disavowal of Trump's corrupt, deceitful, racist, fascist-leaning administration. America was going to say in no uncertain terms, through its vote, that we're better than this and we will not tolerate where the Republicans are taking us. We were going to sweep clean the detritus of the last two years and reset us on a path back to democracy.

Sounds good. Didn't happen.

Instead, enough was won and/or retained by the Repubs to vindicate Trump's "leadership" and make his re-election that much more achievable. Rather than the blowout this should've been, we got thrown a few bones. I'll take them but what I wanted to see was something far more sweeping and dramatic -- a decisive turnaround that would've left Trump impotent and chastised for the scumbag he is. A complete repudiation of the Trump regime. Maybe those expectations were unlikely but they weren't impossible.

Now they're impossible.

So, fine, America is a shithole where lies, racism, misogyny, corruption, fearmongering, incompetence, ignorance and diviseness are rewarded with executive power and nationwide support. It is what it is but the next dumbass who proclaims this to be the "greatest nation on earth" is going to have to back that up with facts. It was always just mindless jingoism but no one just gets a pass on it anymore.

I know all you glass is half-full types will say we won the House and lots more women were elected and that's fine. I agree we made some real progress but Trump won a lot. Far more than he should've.

Sorry for the wall of text. If you read it all you are a patient human being.

I did my part. We replaced Dean Heller and have a democratic governor with a democratic lieutenant governor for the first time in decades. Our state had a solid blue showing this election.

Unfortunately, most people in the country are afraid of their own shadows and will believe any bs story that allows them to shift blame from themselves. Personal responsibility my ass. What a joke!

We need to find ways to use their power against them, and with strong support, Trump is more likely to make mistakes that'll really piss people off. Not all is lost; though, it was not as good as we had hoped. We need to keep the pressure up.

I feel the same way. I am going to take hope from the gains that we made ( because I have had none for the last 2 years) but I am also deeply disappointed that the repulsicans gained as much as they did. ?

From your lips to God's ears...so to speak.

Unless we give republicrats the boot and remove the blocks they set in place as a means of self preservation we will continue to lose freedom for different excuses, bomb brown people along with just about any other group the Saudi's ask us to bomb, supply enemies with weapons and even create our next enemies, and make fools of the people who treat political ideas as yet another religion.

We live in a nation of stupid assholes, that simple, you can't escape it.

Apparently you expected too much on this one day... We made a lot of progress and to belittle that progress sounds like what trump is doing... If you're advocating surrender, then go away...

I'm venting some anger. If you don't like it then you go away.

@Humanistheathen Talk out your ass much? I'm also a progressive liberal that voted straight blue. I had higher expectations for my countrymen that they failed to deliver on. Maybe the fault is mine for expecting more of them than they were capable of or maybe the fault is theirs for not being capable to begin with or maybe the fault is shared. Either way, I'm not being toxic, tribal, uncivilized, obstructionist, or petty simply for being disappointed by the outcome. Frankly, your post just comes off as trolling.

@Humanistheathen I don't feed trolls. Move along now. Shoo!

It's a game of tennis. It's always the same. Back and forth every election or so. You can definitely look for the Republicans to try and pass everything they can in the next couple of months before the Democrats take control of the House because after that it's not going to happen, and the House is going to be investigating as far up the Republican's and Trump's asses as much as they can which will keep them at bay. That might swing the pendulum in 2020, but it might just give the Republicans a bigger stranglehold on the electoral college depending how how voters see it.

That perhaps we’d hit rock bottom, but must claw our way back.. That evil has a mighty grip on this nation. That full-time propaganda works. That it remains far easier to confuse & divide than to educate & unite. That our nation doesn't recognize it’s true place within humanity. That Gerrymandering continues to govern. That organized religion remains a powerful negative force. That angry men and submissive women remain a force to be reckoned with...

Varn Level 8 Nov 7, 2018

We need to find a way to counter the propaganda and whatever else allows this to happen. Serious political reform for sure and, on a more basic level, we need a public that is capable of thinking more clearly. That could be the more difficult challenge.

@itsmedammit Something I’ve come to realize from hanging around here is how the better educated, the more ‘reasons’ there appear to be to have a different opinion… Whereas the ignorant and their single-issue motivation are so easy to coerce..

With half our nation worshiping an idiot (the second in 20 years), someone they can ‘identify with,’ then assuming anyone criticizing their idiot is criticizing them … they appear to ‘fight back’ by supporting said idiot 😕

At least one leg of our government's in the hands of intelligent leaders. And, the thinking media’s kept up on it ...as they’re continuously demeaned.. Our nation should not be here, and though many of us saw it coming … we couldn’t sufficiently inspire or wake enough people to stop it, we didn’t control the wealth of the world...

What the election tells me is that millions of Americans are still complacent lazy assholes when it comes to voting. It also tells me that there are more Americans like rump than I thought. It also tells me to start looking for a way to get the hell out of this Country. If these fascist bastards are going to remain in power we sane Americans are screwed.

Don’t leave.. They didn’t. Let’s go down fighting ~

@Varn I don't have the time to wait. Sessions just fired, the shit is hitting the fan now. I rely on SS and half my husbands pension to survive. If rump stays in power I'm sure I will lose it all. I'm thinking I better get out while I can still sell my house and hope to make a little profit so I can start over somewhere else. Thank goodness I have family in Canada.

Sanity is the operative word here. This country has none left. We put a fascist-leaning game show host with delusions of godhood in charge while the citizens of the richest, most technologically advanced nation on earth lined up like lemmings to follow him blindly.

How the fuck does that happen???

@Redheadedgammy trump wasn’t going anywhere, and maybe it’s best he doesn't; we don’t need pence in there. This ‘Lame Duck session’ concerns me, but they’ve got to act fast… I fear another attack on the ACA.. Not sure what their ‘Senate landscape’ looks like in 2 years … but any Senator attempting to take away healthcare, let alone Social Security ..should consider themselves toast.

@Sgt_Spanky I wish I knew the answer Spanky. Things just seem to be going from bad to worse. I had real hope that there would be a big blue wave and wipe out a whole bunch of these repub scum, but that didn't happen. Yes, some gains were made, but not enough. I have realized that there are far more of the idiot repubs than I thought, and they are screwing up our Country so badly that I fear for my grandchildren's future. It is all very depressing....

@Varn I truly doubt anything will happen to any repub Senator who decides to go after SS, Medicare or the ACA. I am feeling nothing but negative today as I see my life getting harder and harder.

We did see record turnout. I was hoping the Trumpsters would have become more complacent...

@Sgt_Spanky I would like to know how we can start a counter movement. I've never been one for activism, but I guess it is time.

Says I need to be more afraid of my fellow countrymen than I ever thought I'd need to be.

"It's the economy, stupid" Until people more see the they are not doing better or being negatively impacted by Trump's policy's I wouldn't expect much else.

In fact, I'd say in a booming economy the democrats did well. The stupid thing is, if the dumb-ass had've pushed the evenings message rather than the racist immigration bullshit, he probably would have done better.

This is a real sore point with me. The Trumpublicans keep parroting "the economy!" even with no real improvement in their own financial situation. I've actually benefitted with a one time bonus of $1000 and a $3500 per year raise and even I don't see this as a meaningful improvement when measured against the tax cuts for the 1% and the huge ballooning to the deficit, dismantling the ACA and the pending cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. Many of those people saw no improvement or even a decline to their finances and still they squawk about how great the economy is. SOME people, like myself, saw a MINOR uptick while many more saw nothing. Trump's "accomplishments" are bullshit.

Interesting how gas prices were brought to a recent low… The economy’s a large part of it ..and no thanks to trump.

@Sgt_Spanky I agree, he's a master at piling on the bullshit and a lot of people buy into it.

It was never about the money for me. My biggest concern has always been national security. Trump is truly scary in this regard. There is only so much control the sane ones can exert over him, and they won't be able to exert any if they are fired.

I, too, got sick of hearing about the money and what a wonderful idea it would be to have a businessman in the White House, nevermind that he is a piss poor businessman. Its government, not a business. Sheesh.

@itsmedammit I agree, even though I'm a business owner myself I never really bought into that 'we need a businessman to run things'. Especially a billionaire type with a long history of sketchy business dealings.

1

Oh, the vaccuity... the enormity of emptiness that can fit into small, protected spaces.

2

We are a divided nation due to Reality Star Trumpty Dumpty's scaring the shit out of his base with his lies about the Caravan and imigrants. Not surprised Rethuglicans took the Senate. Thank goodness we have oversight with the house. Based on his defensive Press Conference the battle begins.

They had the Senate.. and we had too tuff a row to hoe there. Republican Politics is their new religion; fear & hate is their rallying cry, and a bull-shitting ‘strongman’ is all they need/ed…

4

I agree, it should have been much better. I guess there are a lot more blind people in this country than I thought.
