Anticipating the obligatory Thanksgiving meal. It can be a stressful event. Between all the hard work of preparing and cooking a huge meal and/or the crazy relatives and other guests, it can be overwhelming. How do you anticipate that Thanksgiving dinner will unfold for you?

How about "None of the Above?" I am having a quiet dinner with my wife and the discussion will be about work and how the president is an ass. Other than that, no problems expected.

I will be the only atheist in a church hall full of born agains + one witch. The food will be great and I'll be singing I can't get no satisfaction under my breath while praying goes on. All will be well. No alcohol of any kind, but back at the house there will be Beck's beer and Aquavit.

It's just the kids and I, with enough food to sustain us for a full week without additional cooking. (:

I'll be visiting my brother and sister in law and her huge family. It will be loud, but not angry. They're very loud. All these big family holiday events my brother and I wind up hiding out in the garage after a while. I'm bringing the stuffing, mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts.

It's at my ex sister in law 's place but my kids will be there, and my nephew. Also, I'm bringing a big bottle of wine. ??

Happy event for me but I have a really small family, just 4 including myself. When I had a partner it was a questionable event with 6 to 10 more people. Some fighting, some passing out, usually not really a good time. I do all the cooking and always did for every meal. My partner only knew 2 settings on the stove, off and 10. Having the traditional bird with the usual sides. Friday I will be making turkey soup.

I got suckered into cooking...well babysitting my grand-daughter while my daughter works, "but since you're going to be there dad..." LOL

The homemade stuff is good, but Stove Top, canned veggies/gravy, and a 3 pack of turkey legs will be plenty to eat, fairly easy, and just as tasty. I don't feel like taking 3 days to make my great-aunt's dressing recipe from scratch biscuits/cornbread.

I am flying out to Australia tonight so I will miss this years thanksgiving, which is not a problem for me because I just spent three great weeks with my family

Not doing anything this year. Just another day, which is fine by me.

This has become an annual event for us. At one time we rotated to 3 different homes. Unfortunately, after my partner died the homes were reduced to 2. Earlier, this year the woman in the 2nd homes, husband died so now we are reduced to 1 home. But it is a potluck so it is only about the location. We are all flaming atheists and vegetarian/vegans so everything is harmonious.

Just curious, do you guys do all this turkey and feasting business all over again at Christmas?

In my family we usually do turkey and dressing for Thanksgiving and a Honey baked ham and mashed potatoes for Xmas dinner.

@Redheadedgammy We combine the two at Xmas and most people have Turkey and Ham....and of course traditional Xmas Pudding for afters! I always serve mine with homemade Brandy Butter....then we all fall asleep watching the Queen’s speech on the Telly!

@Marionville the xmas pudding sounds like something I'd like to try. Homemade Brandy Butter??? Hmmmmm that sounds heavenly!!!!

@Redheadedgammy It is just butter and icing sugar whisked together with a good tot of brandy, piled into a glass dish and chilled in the fridge. I decorate with almond flakes and chopped glacé cherries prior to chilling, but that’s optional. It is served chilled with the flaming hot pudding(we set it on fire at the table) and it melts into the rich pudding which is full of dried fruits and nuts. Guinness and brandy are stirred into the mixture prior to steaming the pudding. It’s best to make the pudding about now and keep it in a cool dry place until Xmas morning, then steam it for another hour prior to serving! I’ve been using the recipe my mother got from her mother since I got married....it’s delicious!

Yes, but here in the south US many families do up a ham instead of turkey (or maybe a goose or duck or venison - depends on the hunters in the family and what they harvest).

I do it three times to varying degrees. Canadian thanksgiving is in October so I get to celebrate that. American Thanksgiving and Xmas are pretty close together. For the thanksgivings we do ham and turkey, Xmas usually prime rib.

I do a Sauerbraten dinner at Christmas with the potato dumpling and red cabbage. Except for last year when I did the Jewish tradition of Chinese takeout.
