The border between the USA and Mexico has existed since the USA was founded and there have ALWAYS been migrants and immigrants crossing it with little impediment. Indeed it has been a source of cheap labor that agriculture needs and will continue to need. What has happened at this time in our history that this has all of a sudden become an emergency and a wall needs to be built?
I suspect it has happened just because Trump has called for it and nothing more. He has called for it for no other reason than to rile up white nationalists, xenophobes, racists, bigots and his base.
Just my thoughts on the issue.

I think you would be right. At this fragile point in Cheeto's administration, they are reaching for anything. Mueller is getting this close and they are truly worried. What better way to distract and deflect than to declare a national crisis? If it's such a dire emergency of national security, why isn't the 82nd Airborne being deployed and dropped on the border? Or are they still doing doing their razor wire stringing duties?

Let's see, first there was Obama's birth certificate, then Hillary's theoretical crimes, then Mexican rapists and Muslim terrorists, and of course, there's the continuing saga of the "fake news." Trump always has to have something to get the dumbasses excited about to make sure they don't start asking any questions about his tax returns, failed businesses, ripoff ventures, sexual misadventures, Russian connections, and the fact that everyone who's ever worked with him is in jail, under indictment, under investigation, or has gone public with their stories of his abuse and mental impairment.
So now we get to hear how he's the only one who cares about national security and only he has the answer of how to deal with external threats.
