I have followed every new person joining that is within 20 miles of my location because it would be nice to know others like me in the offline world

So far, few have advanced beyond level 1 or do not post but I wouldn't consider following someone's public posts the same as stalking

In some cases I'm sure that it is. In most however it is that someone has found your posts and comments to be of value to them.

There are people that I used to follow that I no longer follow but they still show up as people I follow. I'm not sure how to go about "Unfollowing" someone.

Go to their profile and press the unfollow button? I think that you can also do it through your profile.

No, it's code for "I like the way you think about something so I want to see more of your thoughts." I follow all kinds of people because they offer something I see as relevant in their posts, not because I intend to attempt to incessantly hound them into a romantic relationship. But, hey, that's just me.

no, how so? stalking implies a lot more than just wanting to be notified when someone makes a post, because you enjoy that person's posts. if this was stalking, setting your dvr to record your favorite tv show would also be stalking.
