Canned laughter? (or filmed before a live studio audience)
I hate it. I don't want or need to be told when to laugh. If its funny then let my chuckle bone decide. Even british sit-coms are not immune to this studio cop out anymore. They are some great shows that are ruined by this. Okay if its Saturday night live or Mrs Browns boys (if you havent seen this then do). Then yes because they are stage shows but why do we need it on "young sheldon". The BBC used to show M.A.S.H. in its heyday without the overdubbed laughter. It made it more poignant and the jokes were funnier for it. If you need an example I am currently watching "Grace and Frankie" no "insert applause here" needed just a good script and superb cast.
Totally agree about the canned laughter. My preference has always been UK humor, cannot understand the US so called funny shows sometimes. I guess each to his own.
If you want to try something fun, put a straw in your mouth in the way a pirate holds a knife in his mouth while climbing in movies. Sorry, best way I could think of to illustrate it. Anyway, hold a straw in your mouth that way and listen to a laugh track. There's a good chance you'll laugh uncontrollably. It's because when you hold a straw like that, you're using the same muscles you would be for laughing. This activates some of the neurons responsible for laughing and when your brain hears laughter, it's too difficult to hold it back because now you have even more laughter neurons activated.
MASH used to be shown in the UK without the canned laughter when I was a kid but all the reruns have the chuckle track added
Yes. The laugh track on MASH. They are in tents in the Korean wilderness.
It was so odd.
