Do you actually watch what you're watching on TV?

I've become aware lately that when I do have the TV on I'm rarely ever actually watching it. Doesn't seem to matter if it's a movie or a home builders show or cooking show, I'm always doing something else while it's on. Mostly I'm on the computer, either online or playing games, cards, Angry Birds and such. I can't remember the last time I watched something from start to finish without doing something else and basically just listening.

Am I alone in this?

my eyes are bad, and my body hurts. to watch tv i have to turn in a way that is often painful, and then i can't see very well anyway. so i mostly listen, but i listen intently. if i am doing something else at the same time, that usually doesn't interfere. occasionally i will turn and just watch. that doesn't happen often.

i also keep the tv on while i sleep because i have tinnitus.

@mzbehavin it works -- except sometimes it's interesting and keeps us up!

What you are describing is easy for those us who were chiuldrenl before the age of television. In those days, radio was the only live medium available. We learned to listen carefully and to visualize in our own minds what was happening. It required active engagement with our minds, not just with our eyes. With television, onr can be and all too often lis just a passive recipient.

It's in the background but I listen while I'm online and look up when action scenes start...

But still all the subliminal messages are getting thru, my dear

I hardly ever have my TV on, unless I'm specifally watching something. I've heard people refer to some show series as a great "background show" they they just have on the TV while they're doing something else. Not me.

It's only on when I watch it. Otherwise, it's off.

I rarely turn it on.

I enjoy a great deal of television, but with my ADHD only a few shows get my full attention. I surf the net, I play games, I text and mess around on agnostic.

Breaking Bad, The Wire, Person of Interest, The Good Place, Westworld and a few others get my undivided attention. Most other shows, even if I love them, just don't pull me in fully.

You are not alone.

I do that for a lot of shows, but generally not documentaries or foreign movies...I have to read the subtitles to understand, lol...

I have certain series that I have watched so many times that I can basically pick up at any point...NCIS, Supernatural, etc. I still knit or crochet while watching most shows...I can't just sit and watch either...
