My landlord and I just had a discussion about Northam. He doesn't think he should resign. He's a conservative Republican, btw. When I asked him why, he cited an example from HIS college days that I found rather unsurprising: he said that one could find photos of him (my landlord) from his KA days in college posed in Confederate War uniform (knowing Jeff, I'm sure it was a General's, lol). I told him that neither was excusable. The Civil War uniform was a little less bad, but I trust if Jeff HAD been a politician, he would have fessed up and gotten out ahead of it and said BEFORE RUNNING: This will surface. I did this in college. IT is not indicative of the man I am now. I did something then that I know now (and should recognised then) is deeply insulting to African-Americans. I apologize and will endeavor to run a campaign based on racial equality and justice for ALL. And that is what I wish NORTHAM would have done. How does one "forget" a photo of oneself in blackface or a KKK outfit, if one is a POLITICIAN??? See, that's what I can't get past. He tried to hide it, or at least hoped it would never come to light. And THAT, in this day and age, is just plain rampant stupidity. Sorry, Ralph. I really liked you (what I thought I knew and who you might be, Idk). But you are no longer viable. OR if you do manage to limp on and finish out your term as governor, I think your political career is over.

Yes, people CAN change, but it's unlikely. Most people don't. I believe it is very important for politicians and anyone else elected to public servitude must be looked at very closely. If they have a habit of lying, means they haven't changed.

there is also another factor, unless your landlord went to med school or some other extended postgraduate entity. he was likely still a teen. that doesn't excuse it; that's not why i mention it. but northam was in medical school. he was an adult. and yes, being either in blackface or a kkk hood and robe is not the same as being in a confederate uniform -- or we have to condemn civil war reenactors as well, right? it depends on the intent. there is no mistaking the intent of northam's pose. i don't think they were learning about the medical risks and benefits of minstrel shows (or lynchings).

It's hard for me to condemn people for stupid shit they did in their college years short of criminal behavior or violence. I was young once, and while I didn't do racist shit or pose for insensitive and stupid photos.
I agree with you that Northam was stupid to wait for this to come to light before addressing it, but I would be more concerned with where he stands now. I'm skeptical, and extraordinary effort must be made to prove it, but people can change.
