OFGS. "Racist" eludes to the belief that one race is superior to another by virtue of birth". "I am not a racist but......." depends on what follows. So.....

I'm not a racist but I do think the NAACP does good work.
@Countrywoman Racism is more than " the belief that one race is superior to another". It is any system which favors one race over another. The NAACP is by definition racist, since it operates a colour bar and only promotes one race.
I used to use that phrase until I realized what I was actually saying. That's when I changed. You can NOT be racist if you have to preface something with that.

‘I’m not mad, BUT’
The BUT negates anything that precedes it.
@CarolinaGirl60 It's not a negation, it's a qualification.
e.g. "I'm a man but I still love to wear dresses", does not negate the fact that I am a man, as wearing dresses does not make me a woman.
