Identity politics
It seems to be the trend now that everyone is group. We are all now defined by what we are instead of who we are. Gone is the dream of one world. Martin Luther Kings vision up in smoke. You are the race, gender, sexual orientation or religion first and a person second. I should not complain. I cannot complain, as a straight WASP apparently I am privileged. The winner of identity lottery As I sit here worrying how to make it through the month I pity the poor bastards who lost. "But you don't know what its like to be a ..... and suffer the abuse and fear." True I am not in your group but I have been abused, attacked and afraid. Now I`m not saying that we all face the same problems or diminish anyone's suffering. Yes there are things in society that need to get better for disadvantaged groups but to define yourself and others by that group is bigotry and prejudice. Worst still is to say that just because you are part of that group then you speak for all of that grouping. If I say "I like or don't like that" and you disagree. Just because your in a different group does not make me a race/sex/homophobist. It just means that we differ. Plus there is a supreme arrogance to speak for other people. "I am offended by that remark and I am a .....Therefore that is offensive to all ......" Worst still is the offence taken on other groups behalf. To say that the Washington Redskins is racist by name is as ludicrous to say the same about the Dallas Cowboys.
Now there is the party line aspect. If the received wisdom is A, and anyone says B, Then they are ist unless they belong to that group then they are traitors. An extreme case of this was in France recently. A porn star called Brigitte Lahaie said that it is possible for a woman to enjoy rape. As you can imagine the condemnation this remark received was huge. Womens groups and the me too movement forced an apology. But I ask myself why she had to apologise? She did not say all, most, a significant number or do, she said "some" and "possible". Just as its possible for me to win the lottery. Before you cry "No its not" I do know one woman who did once, so therefore it is. That should not diminish anyone's suffering. I had all my harmonicas stolen at a festival. It did me a favour as it forced me to upgrade. That does not mean that all theft is good or even acceptable in any conditions. Okay its not like rape but the principle is the same.
Its about time that we start to say "This is what I am. Not who I am" and treat people less as their label and more as a person. Just because one person is a jerk does not mean that all "those people" are jerks. You might as well lump Hitler in with Gandhi, There were both hetro males..

What have the Romans ever done for us? The People’s Front Of Judea every time!

Peoples Front of Judea?! No! Its the Judean Peoples Front!

That looked interesting, but I stopped two sentences in. Throw a few paragraph breaks in next time.

Sorry Im not responsible for your attention span

@273kelvin I read several books a week; my attention span is considerable.

But I won't eat where the cook just slings the food on the table.

If only we could achieve attachment to a human identity, without the prejudices. That would a postive outcome.

It boils down to as long as there is an "us", there is a "them". We've been dividing ourselves for a long time. I'm not convinced that we can easily learn ourselves out of this.

I liked it better when we could ignore groups of people. It stinks that previously disenfranchised people got together to demand some regard.

I am not saying that tribes should not band together for better lives. That is the nature of tribal politics. What I am saying is to define yourself and others primly that tribe is wrong.

@273kelvin I'm saying it wasn't an issue when we could dismiss whole groups of people. I'd rather identity politics then politics of exclusion

Much of what you said is correct.
I suppose that's one reason why I'm usually an outlier. I don't want to belong to any group. (And that makes me think about Groucho Marx)

I don't like identity politics. Too many people get left out.
Inclusion means everyone.
I'm kind of tired of everyone retreating into their little groups, with all their acronyms.

I have nothing against anyone for whatever their differences may be.
Unless you're an asshole, then I will hold your assholiness against you.

I agree with much of what you say. In 1968 Oliver and Shaver wrote in th Harvard Educational Review that Johnson's "great society" vision was well intended but the thrust we needed. They said that the problem was "the missing community" -- that we were fragmenting more and more into our own special interest groups and identity groups, rather than simply to share thoughts, ideas, solutions to create a sense of community in pursuit of the common good. The problem has gotten hugely worse , especially since the 1990s. If you want to find the original article, I suggest that you Google Oliver, Shaver, Neumann, a the Harvard Educational Review, and "the missing community>"

That was a lucid and well-thought-out post and I agree wholeheartedly with most of it. Very well done.

There's power in numbers. You don't even have to be right. You can be 'democratically' right. All you need to do to justify behaving badly is to pretend you're the victim while you're being an ass. And then your buddies will back you up.

I think you posted in the wrong discussion.

@OwlInASack Actually yes, when they fail to respond to commands of police officers and react violently towards them as shown in many cases, they essentially create their own oppression. I get overly questioned by police because I have panic disorder, so most assume my anxiety is due to illegal activity. Its not fair to be accused when you have done nothing wrong, but I do not react violently, I explain the situation in a way that they can understand.
Things like this happen more often than they should because minorities are statistically more likely to be in an active gang or drug dealing ring. That being said I do wish they would do the same to the staggering number of white meth addicts in this area. In that respect, its clear that the focus of law enforcement can be one sided. Everything is situational and depends on the individuals involved, regarding most of these issues. Most LEOs do the best they can given the situation. Keep in mind that in most cases like this, last week one of them was shot because they let their guard down. Also remember, they will shoot white people too, naked white drunk college guy ran at them so they put him down, they kinda have to in that situation.

@OwlInASack I did. So you went off on a tangent and somebody followed you. Now you think you're validated. Sad.

@OwlInASack I'm not going down the road with you on your liberal rant. That's not this discussion.

oh good lord!
