Not since Teddie Roosevelt, some 110 years ago, has any Republican president or the national Republican party introduced any initiative to create, expand, or improve working conditions, worker rights, abolishing child labor, living conditions, control of monopolies, limiting of reckless financial speculation, Social Security, programs to help people during the Great Depression women's suffrage, women's rights, Medicare, Medicaid, health care, civil rights, voting rights, control of racial and religious bigotry, or any action to improve the lives of the people of our country.
The Republican party is simply the party of privilege, ethnocentrism, authoritarian law and order, limited government and greed. In the past 20 years it has also become the party of obstruction, incivility, corruption, and greed. This is a message that must be spread far and wide. Today's Republican Party is simply incapable of governing in the interest of the country and of ALL of our people.

Democrat/GOP Vote Tally on 1964 Civil Rights Act. ... With a little research, the actual voting record for both Houses of Congress shows that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed the Senate on a 73-to-27 vote. The Democratic supermajority in the Senate split their vote 46 (69%) for and 21 (31%) against.Dec 31, 2002

I greatly doubt that MLK Jr. was a Republican. Still it was not the Republican party that INITIATED the legislation. I am sure that some Republicans voted for it. And, 1960s Democrats are today's southern Republicans. Surely you have to know that.
actually eisenhower initiated the highway system, ostensibly to improve the lives of the people of our country. i don't think that was the real motivation though. i think it was the auto industry's way of squashing public transportation and ensuring its profits. i don't know whether ike had good motivations or was in on it. he certainly was not the worst republican ever but he was just as certainly not a good president. meanwhile, yes, the rest holds true; the republican party has, even in teddy's time (which is why he had to create his own offshoot of the party) long been the party of corporate greed. the defection of the dixiecrats to the republican party and nixon's southern strategy clinched it, and its deterioration was from then on much faster and much more deliberate. now i don't even consider it a party. it is a criminal operation posing as a political party, having acquired enough political power to do so.

I don't knock Eisenhower. He was a good man who did not belong to either party until he was asked to run for president. His highway system was primarily for national defense, built on the model of the German Autobahn to facilitate the movement of men and military material. Still, he did little to deal with any human issues.
@wordywalt the defense system may have been a real justification but the auto industry was at least partly responsible for it and defense was not on their minds. eisenhower was a good man in many ways. i take issue with his not pardoning the rosenbergs, and with his adding "under god" to the pledge and changing our motto to "in god we trust.".
