I find it funny how religious people keep saying you can't be spiritual without religion. As far as I can tell religion is a system of beliefs that prevents people from being kind, generous, accepting of others, and having compassion towards people or animals.

Man created religion to explain what he could not understand. Sad that it's all been co-opted by the egos of some men and women and used as a weapon to control, gain power and untold wealth at the expense of others.

Think you’ve been in some pretty weird religions or just one. What religions are you referring to?

Never been religious I am the proverbial outsider looking in at all of them....

@Lizard_of_Ahaz Obviously not all of them. Just sounds like a jaundiced view of the Abrahamic religions!

@Geoffrey51 That would be their own fault....

@Lizard_of_Ahaz What would be their own fault?

@Geoffrey51 Their behaviour.... Wasn't it one of your own countrymen who murdered all those Muslims in New Zealand?...

@Lizard_of_Ahaz I’m sorry but I don’t see how there is a connection between your argument and mass murder. What am I missing? I am probably misunderstanding your suggestion. Please explain.

@Geoffrey51 Maybe you should read about his RELIGIOUSLY MOTIVATED attack....

@Lizard_of_Ahaz I’m not clear whether you are arguing for religious understanding or religious abolition. Please let me know, I have probably missed something in your posts. That way we can have a complete discussion. At the moment I am not clear as to what your position is. If I am understanding your position I refute your suggestion that religion prevents people from being kind and compassionate. Perhaps w can start there and see where we go.

Raises a question of symantics, as what is the meaning of the word spritual? If a principle meaning of the word in most contexts is that which nobody can understand, then at extreme levels of size (and perhaps time) everything is spirtual. Eg. of what is an electron made of, or what is space?

Being "spiritual" can mean anything that you want it to mean. This is why we have so many denominations of religion and types of religions.

Most people who call themselves spiritual claim to not be religious, as in "I'm spiritual but not religious." They clearly don't mean spiritual as opposed to physical. No one is claiming to be nonphysical. Just what they do mean is pretty vague. I think they are Christians who don't wake up early enough on Sundays for church services.

In my experience people who declare being spiritual and not religious are adherents of 90’s New Age ideas which draw together many philosophical/ religious ideas.

It's easier for us because we have nothing to cherry pick but our own conscience.

Conscience is just thinly veiled self-interest.... Cannibalism for instance... You don't want to go around eating people or you might give them the idea to eat you....

@Lizard_of_Ahaz Think what you want.

i've never heard a religious person say that. indeed, i think spiritualism is religion light, but that's just me.

Soooo you are a hermit?.... Because if I had a penny for every time I have heard one say it I would be richer than the Walton and Koch families combined....

i am not a hermit and yes, i have never heard one say that. then again, even not being a hermit, i do not hang around with religious people. why would i?

It can be said that God has always been in existence. Religion is man made. Back to part 1, how was God created, what are God's origins?

Accepting others!?
Haha
Today my Christian coworker mentioned to my Christian boss he had thrown it in the trash (his copy of a piece of paper). I asked what he had tossed. He said: a jehovah witness propaganda. And had a face like it was crap stuff.

How respectful and accepting is that? So hypocritical

I am sure it was just the bile.... I love to nail them in a bible bout myself.... Including a reference to Matthew 6:5-9 to get the ball rolling...

Matthew 6:5-9 New International Version (NIV)
Prayer

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9 “This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,

I do love the idea of a 'signed copy' of the Bible however....ha ha. I see some religions as being divisive...us against them. Those who belong are convinced that they are somehow 'better' than those who don't. Some are blessed and the rest will be punished. And this kind of thinking creates the tendency for inhumane actions It justifies our wars and 'ethnic cleansing' efforts. And it gives the impression that the poor deserve their fate in this world. (ie: God made it this way for a reason...God's will).

Kind of broad brush. All religious people are racist, no Compassion etc. Its this type of negativity that real limits any chance of dialogue.

I think you honestly need to read the post and use proper grammar in determining what I actually said....

My ILS worker is evangelical. She went on a racist rant last time I was in the car with her. She named nearly all varieties of human being, except white, as being despicable and treachorous. I'm looking for a new ILS worker who is non-evangelical, non-racist, non-LGBT hating.

@Theresa_N You need to report her as well...
