WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING IN THE WORLD?
Thailand is performing coronation of a new king, who was considered as a misbehaving young man, unworthy of becoming a king once.

[bbc.com]

There is a lot of poverty in Thailand but you will see the King and Queen's photos in every house including in every Thai restaurant overseas including in the U.S.

Fighting religious ignorance is going to take a very long time.

The new king has some VERY big shoes to fill. I wish him all the best.

I have a sinking feeling I'm the only one who read the cited source.

My eyes rolled when I saw the picture of the royal fan and fly whisk. "Gimme the royal fly swatter!" cried the king.

About 12 years ago I was with someone that wanted me to go to Phucket, Thailand with her. 10 days later, she dumps me lol.

So you just said "Phucket" after that?

@Paul4747 pretty much

Plenty of other fish in and out of the ocean in Phuket. Should have just shrugged your shoulders and went and asked out the cute waitress or shop keeper you and I both know you had eyes for. She probably would have said yes, and given you a far more memorable time in the Land Of Smiles.

Instead of fighting religious ignorance in Thailand maybe it would be more fruitful to learn why Americans are flocking over there for their health care. Thailand must not be all that ignorant.

Access is far better but quality not so much. At least not across-the-board.

Thailand is full of incredible professionals in all medical forms. I cannot remember what time of year it is but in Bangkok there are 1000's especially from the middle East that travel to Thailand for all sorts of procedures from dental through to gender operations.
The trouble is just like the West all the money is owned by the few.
The brother of my ex gf was a fantasting builder, electrician, tiler and many more but his daily pay was about £11 a day no holidays paid.

Who, exactly, considered him "unworthy" as a young man? And why would anybody care at this point? Including you......

I am reporting media reports of the surveys of Thai people conducted 2 years ago. The prince was not that young. It should matter to coronation of a king where such position is not just highly respected and revered by people. Why should I care? Because good human beings are trapped into nonsensical traditions, I came from a culture like that and it hurts to think what it does to a society, especially to promising young men and women.

@Tiramisu because all other kings & queens, since the beginning of time, have been of irreproachable character........

He’s a weirdo and a complete asshole who abandoned his first family and disinherited his kids. Just because he’s a shit person. And in divorce court, he said a bunch of shit about his wife and because Thai law very strictly forbids insulting the royals, she was unable to speak even in her defense, lest she insult him by implying he was lying. He also once had his girlfriend attend a party either naked or mostly naked. Don’t know why or if she consented.

@FreethoughtKaty and this is your business, and to judge him, because....?

@AnneWimsey because I want to

@AnneWimsey The old King was adored by his people, his son however is a completely different item.
There are questions why he lived abroad for so long and many rumours regarding his treatment of women.
Is he corrupt only time will tell.
Thais cannot speak out about the Royal family if the do they face harsh justice.

Thai people loved their king. He ran the country for many years. There is an entire generation that never knew anything else but their king. The son was young and stupid like anybody else but all and all, the country went through a peaceful transition. Anyhow, I've had the opportunity to go to Thailand many times over a span of 6 years on bussiness and I have nothing but utmost respect and great memories from a great country with great people.

It is not about the people. It is the baggage of ignorance that is passed on from one generation to another. It is every generation's responsibility to filter out what is not relevant and does not make sense for the generation ahead. Many outdated traditions and practices that have no relation to people's well being but are continued because we are told it is for the respect of the elders.

I'm certain we're never going to be "rid of" religion.
It's too ingrained into too many people and their cultures.
The only thing that will rid humanity of religion is the end of humanity.

I believe the root cause is ignorance. Wherever there is ignorance, religion fits the void nicely.

Exactly, you nailed it!!

@Sandman07 All the more reason it will never be eradicated.
